Book Review - Snow Business by Andrew Reed - Bookish World Cup - Sweden

Amazon UK
Title: Snow Business
Author: Andrew Reed
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Matador
Publication Date: 23rd January 2018
Rating: 5 Stars

A humorous account of what it’s really like to be a ski rep
A useful guide for aspiring ski reps, providing insight into a typical winter season
Explores Swedish culture and traditions– portrays Sweden in an honest, different light

Andrew Reed spent a winter as a ski rep for a well known UK travel company in the resort of Åre, Sweden. The book is a humorous account of his experiences from the daunting first week of the selection process in Austria, the convoluted journey by road, ship and rail to the resort itself and through the hectic first month of setting up in resort.

The chapters that follow reveal a very different type of ski resort to the normal alpine resort with activities that included snowmobile safaris, husky dog sledging, chaotic reindeer rides and visits to the spectacular frozen waterfall. Even the Northern Lights and the real Santa Claus make brief appearances.

The book offers a realistic, honest perspective and explains the strains and pressures of the job, including working in close proximity to others over such a long, hard season which finished well beyond the alpine resorts. It will help aspiring reps to prepare by offering useful advice and encouragement, but it is also of interest to the wider ski and travel community.

Snow Business is based on Andrew’s Nordic adventures and it provides a fascinating insight into the country, its people and its traditions, along with the quirks of the language. It will appeal to those who love all things skiing, or those with an interest in Swedish culture.

Being a former summer season children's rep, I was automatically drawn to a book written by someone who spent a season as a rep, even if it was at the other end of the experience pool to me. For Andrew Reed spend a season in the 90s in a ski resort in Sweden.

Amazingly I could relate to so much of this book, from the detailed training week, which had so many elements that rang true to my own experiences, to the amazement at some of the things  guests say while on holiday.

What made this book so special though was it wasn't just about the after ski, or the drunken nights out of which are prevalent in this lifestyle, but how keen Andrew was to learn some Swedish, and experience all the excursions and gain everything he could from his 6 months in the middle of nowhere.

From the ridiculous journey from the training week in Austria, to the resort in Sweden,  which was not the logical flight, which reminded me of my third season in Greece, with a long day of travelling that seemed largely unnecessary , to the descriptions of some of his epic skiing adventures, I felt as though I was alongside Andrew for every step of the way.

I loved how the book was split into 6 chapters one for each month he was in Sweden, but that also there were many subheadings that tended to be Abba song titles.  As the season progressed we hear about different groups of guests, friendships with the locals,  and the excursions.   Wow I wish I had been able to take part in some of these trips they all sounded fabulous.

There are mentions of the excitement when a major fast food chain was opening up in the nearest town,  and I can liken that to my own experiences of a supermarket chain being expected to open a branch near the resort I was in one year, or the pre-season exploration of the island where all the others I was with had to eat in that same fast food chain, when I would have been happier in any proper restaurant.

There are some stories from this that will stick with me, especially the one involving a bear, or the one with the off piste skiing, or the racing, and the general frustration with your colleagues is something I could also fully relate too.

Thoroughly enjoyed every moment of Snow Business, and reading while the Winter Olympics was taking place meant I understood a bit more of the skiing terms than I may have normally. If anyone wants to know what life as a ski rep or holiday rep in general is like then this is definitely worth a read.

Thank you to Netgalley and Matador for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Guest Post & Giveaway - For the Love of Dogs! by Carol Thomas - #CuteChristmas

It is said that there are two types of people in this world, cat people and dog people. Of course this is not strictly true, some people have cats and dogs, some have a menagerie and some have no animals at all. However, for those that fall firmly into the dog or cat camp their chosen furry friend is said to reveal character traits by association.

Of course there are always exceptions, but broadly speaking cats (and therefore their owners) are considered largely self-sufficient, they like life to be on their terms and they are not overtly social. Dogs, on the other hand, are considered both more needy and more giving than cats. They demand attention and yet reward the smallest of gestures with unconditional love. Requiring frequent exercise, dogs encourage their owners to go out and inspire all manner of social exchanges. They are known for being protective and loyal.

For these reasons dogs frequently crop up in romance novels. They create opportunities for interaction, by association they lead us to believe we know something of their owners, we trust their judgment and they play a good supporting role. The fact my contemporary romance novel, Crazy Over You, is in part dedicated to my dogs Benson and Milo (it’s OK no one ever gets labeled a crazy dog lady) shows I am very much a dog person.

Benson, my chocolate Labrador, was the inspiration for Bramble the dog in Crazy Over You. Writing him into the story felt completely natural, especially as his take on love and loyalty was an inspiration. He seemed the perfect character for a story in which, for the humans at least, love, loyalty and living happily ever after are put to the test. At a time when Abby, the protagonist, feels alone Bramble is the one who remains by her side, a constant support.

My thoroughly gorgeous boy, Benson, was the strong silent type, saying more with a look than he ever did with a bark. Never being one to go for long walks (seriously he would simply sit down and refuse to go on) he made his own fun when it came to exercise: Puppy running (that is the kind of full-pelt-arched-back running you see in cartoons) around our living room even once he was fully grown; playing throw and catch, with him launching the ball from his mouth and me catching it; and enjoying hide and seek, waiting patiently while I hid his favourite toy for him to find.

As I reflect on our time together I see that he was one of my constants, I could rely on him for a cuddle no matter what the ups and downs of life. He was generous with his affection, strong and yet gentle (even when he dragged my eldest daughter through a flowerbed in pursuit of a cat, covering her in pansies, he meant her and the cat no harm). Although I have also been lucky enough to own Milo, my adorable black Labrador, and I have Hubble, my loveable puppy, Benson was one of those dogs that will always hold a special place in my heart.

When he passed away earlier this year, a month before his sixteenth birthday, it was a terrible loss. This will be our first Christmas without him, he won’t be hear to knock the baubles off the tree with his tail, or to rip up the wrapping paper once the presents are open. It will be a strange time without him, but one full of happy memories. I am pleased he is a part of Crazy Over You. In reading about Bramble I hope others feel his warmth too.

Thank you so much Carol for sharing Benson with us. He sounds like an amazing dog, and I hope Christmas doesn't feel too weird without him.

Crazy Over You: Love can drive you crazy… in more ways than one!

When Abby met Simon it was the start of something special, a love Abby believed would last a lifetime.

A wedding, two daughters and fifteen years later Abby’s world is falling apart. Having discovered Simon has had an affair her normally ordered mind is spiralling out of control. Crushed by the betrayal and shocked by her own reaction, she knows she needs to get herself together. She’s just not sure where to start.

With Simon on a mission to win her back and a close friend hiding a secret that could push her further over the edge, Abby finds strength and support where she least expects it. But as she attempts to gain control of her life and make decisions about her future, it may be more than the limits of Abby’s mind that are put to the test!

Funday Friday - Truth or Lie? - Jane Cable - Month 6 Week 4

Welcome to the latest edition of Truth of Lie. My name is Rachel and I will be your host, for this exciting new game show. Each Friday, I will have one contestant, and they will be answering at least 14 questions. There is of course one small twist...

For three of the answers, they have to lie. It is your task as the viewer to guess which three answers are lies. You are allowed 3 guesses and I want them posted into the comments field.

Every 4 weeks, I will close the guessing, count up how many correct answers each of you has, and create a leaderboard. Anyone who is top of the leaderboard, will go into a draw for a paperback of the winners choice (open internationally).

Please do include a way for me to contact you (email or twitter or similar), so that I can let you know if you have won.

The weekend after a 4 week period closes, not only will I produce a leaderboard, and announce a winner, I will also let you know into the true answers, and which were the lies.

Closing date for the sixth month is 11pm on 27th October 2016.

So without further ado, let's meet today's contestant.

Good morning contestant, please can you tell me your name and a little bit about yourself?

I’m Jane Cable and I’m a writer of romantic novels with a twist of suspense. My first novel, The Cheesemaker’s House, is a spooky tale about a divorcee who moves to Yorkshire and meets new neighbours from the present… and the past. My second book, The Faerie Tree, is about a couple who meet again twenty years after their brief affair and discover their memories of it are completely different. My third, The Seahorse Summer, has just been signed by Endeavour Press and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
Please to meet you Jane, congratulations on your Endeavour Press deal, I hope you have great success with The Seahorse Summer.

Now onto the show, and remember everyone, Jane hasn't been entirely truthful with three of these answers, so it is up to you to guess which ones they are (only 3 guesses per person though).

1) Who is your favourite author?

Favourites come and go but the most enduring on my list is R F Delderfield, a master of the saga at a time when England was changing beyond all recognition.

2) What book do you wish you had written?

Without a doubt it’s The Time Traveler’s Wife. It was a book which opened up new worlds for me because it showed me that if characters were convincing enough readers were happy to suspend disbelief while their story unfolded.

3) Tell me about any really memorable dream or nightmare you have had

It was actually the dream Alice has about Owen in The Cheesemaker’s House the night after she first sees him, swimming in the river. It was just a gentle kiss on the lips from a man I didn’t know but I could still feel it when I woke up.

4) What was your most memorable holiday ever?

A trip to Newquay in Cornwall in the summer of 1987. We stayed with my friend’s Auntie Megan who owned a surf shop and fell in love with her boyfriend Robin who seemed the epitome of cool to two teenage girls.

5) If you could be a fruit, what would you be and why?

A prickly pear because they’re so hard to eat.

6) What is the most annoying interview question you have ever been asked?

If you could be a fruit, what would you be and why?

7) What is your dream job, and have you tried to achieve it?

My dream job is being an author so in some ways I have achieved it – just not in a way that I can give up my day job just yet.

8) Can you describe for me what your perfect day would involve?

Without a doubt it would be a glorious day in early September and I’d be on the north Cornwall coast body boarding with my husband and some friends. Then we’d be picked up by helicopter to have dinner at Winteringham Fields in Lincolnshire and spend the night in one of their gorgeous rooms.

9) Please name a cocktail that would describe you perfectly, and what’s in it?

I’m a mojito at heart. Sweet, sharp and hopefully refreshing. If not, rum-soaked will do me fine.

10) Besides reading, which I am guessing is a given, what other hobbies do you have?

I am passionate about my garden, in particular growing dahlias. I never tire of their wonderful jewel colours and I planted a whole bed in memory of my mother after she died last year. I even post pictures of them on Twitter sometimes.

11) Did you have an invisible friend as a child? If so please tell me about them.

Definitely. I was an only child and invented a little white mouse that came everywhere in my pocket. I have a very clear memory of being upstairs at the front of a bus with him sitting on the palm of my hand taking in the view.

12) What would your ideal pet be?

A teddy bear. All of the love and none of the hassle.

13) Who is the most important person in the world to you?

Without a doubt it’s my husband. I was lucky enough to meet a man who is best friend as well as lover, business partner and the person I most want to spend my time with – even after 22 years.

14) If you won the lottery, how would you spend the money?

It depends how much I won! But realistically it would buy me the time to be a full time author. I’d love to do some good with it as well, most likely helping people who suffer from depression and other mental health issues.

Thank you so much for agreeing to take part Jane and I am sorry for being the supplier of your most annoying interview question, but I do love your answer to it!

I hope you have enjoyed this edition of Truth or Lie? I will be back next week with another episode, and in the mean time...
Don't forget to guess the lies, to be in with a chance of a prize!

And check out previous week's Truth or Lie's that you may have missed here

Closing date for the fifth month is 11pm on 29th September 2016.

So without further ado, let's meet today's contestant.

Good morning contestant, please can you tell me your name and a little bit about yourself?

Hello, I am Carol Thomas author or Crazy Over You, a contemporary romance novel, published through Matador. Crazy Over You is an honest portrayal of one woman’s reaction to her husband’s infidelity while also being a story of family, friendship, hope and love.
Please to meet you Carol, I remember reviewing Crazy Over You a while ago and really enjoying it, so fantastic to have you on board.

Now onto the show, and remember everyone, Carol hasn't been entirely truthful with three of these answers, so it is up to you to guess which ones they are (only 3 guesses per person though).

1) What book do you wish you had written?

I am always discovering books and plots I wish I had written. The latest is Sarah Morgan’s Sleigh Bells in the Snow because I loved the landscape, the family and Jackson O’Neil. It is the kind of book where you can imagine the author smiling as she wrote it.

2) Tell me about any really memorable dream or nightmare you have had.

When I was growing up my family’s annual holiday was to Pontins, usually Brean Sands though we went to Camber Sands a couple of times too. While there I frequently dreamt that a gorilla of King Kong proportions would come and take me away. I have visited Pontins once as an adult but never had the same dream.

3) What was your most memorable holiday ever?

I have had lots of lovely holidays but one that will always stay with me was a skiing trip with my secondary school to Les Orres in the French Alps. It was my first holiday without my family. We stayed for six days, spending the days attempting to ski and the evenings being teenagers (don’t tell my parents)!

4) What superpower would you love to have?

I would like the ability to duplicate myself and be in more than one place at a time. That way I could get more done, there are never enough hours in the day.

5) What is your dream job, and have you tried to achieve it?

Growing up I wanted to be a lorry driver! As I got older I decided I was probably more suited to being a teacher. It is a dream I achieved. In 1999 I started teaching in a primary school as my eldest daughter started secondary school.

6) Can you describe for me what your perfect day would involve?

A day spent at the spa being thoroughly pampered, including a manicure, pedicure and my new favourite (after being treated to this on Mother’s Day) a frangipani nourish wrap. With four children, it’s a perfect way to escape, relax and unwind!

7) Besides reading, which I am guessing is a given, what other hobbies do you have?

I enjoy cycling, it is a great way to get out into the fresh air and to see some of the lovely countryside we have here in the South of England. It helps me clear the cobwebs, sort out any plot or character issues I have and keep fit.

8) Did you have an invisible friend as a child? If so please tell me about them.

I am the youngest of six children and so always had company around me and never had time for an imaginary friend. My eldest daughter had one, however, his name was Onions Baldy (though I think that had nothing to do with his appearance) and she spoke to him in the mirror.

9) What would your ideal pet be?

My beautiful boys Benson and Milo, both Labradors, with the ability to stay fit, healthy and live until I die so I never have to live a day without them. I have lost them both in the last year and miss their love and cuddles terribly.

10) What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to music?

The Magic music channel at Christmas and any time they are playing songs from films of the 80s.

11) If you could only look at one view for the rest of eternity, what or where would you like to be to see this view?

It would have to be an open landscape. Somewhere where you can see the sky and a dramatic change in the seasons – that way it would be always changing. It would also have to be somewhere the trees change into beautiful colours in the autumn (that’s my favourite time of year), Canada perhaps, or the French Alps.

12) Do you consider yourself to be an angel or a devil? Please give an example to validate your answer

I think I am a devil by nature but I strive to be an angel, some days it requires more work than others. I am sure my closest family would be willing to validate this but if you actually want an example you would have to meet me when I am tired or sitting next to someone eating loudly (these things bring out my dark side!).

13) Who is your ideal Disney character?

Sven the reindeer, he reminds me of my dog Benson – big, brown, loving, loyal and a bit daft.

14) If you could be an animal what would you be and why?

My sister has a cat that she thinks looks like me, so perhaps I would make a good cat. I am loving and loyal but can also be stubborn, independent and come across as aloof (I’m not I am shy but people often don’t realise!).

Thank you so much Carol for taking part, I hope you have enjoyed your time on Truth or Lie? I must say  I also tend to love the Christmas music channels, and love the idea of your dog being like Sven the Reindeer.

I hope you have enjoyed this edition of Truth or Lie? I will be back next week with another episode, and in the mean time...
Don't forget to guess the lies, to be in with a chance of a prize!

Guest Post - Carol Thomas talking about Crazy Over You her new book

Thank you to Carol Thomas, for coming onto Rachel's Random Reads, to talk about her new romance, Crazy Over You. My review has also been posted today, so take a look after you read what Carol has to say.

Love, loyalty and living happily ever after are put to the test in my new romance novel Crazy Over You!

Have you ever been driven crazy by love? As the subtitle of my book states, love can drive you crazy in more ways than one. There are times – particularly in the early stages of a relationship – when you can feel completely crazy, head over heals in love, and then there are the times when you can feel aspects of your partner or relationship might literally drive you crazy! It is this range of emotions that I set out to explore in Crazy Over You

Like many women Abby Turner always assumed her take on infidelity would be zero tolerance – walk away, don’t look back (cue Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive) and move on in the knowledge that the person left behind didn’t deserve you. From the vantage point of her mostly happy, fifteen-year marriage and with her opinions informed by books and films it had all seemed so straightforward. So why isn’t it that simple when it becomes her reality?

Abby’s story begins almost two months after she has discovered her husband Simon has had an affair. In the wake of their separation she feels ashamed of the darkness that sometimes engulfs her and unwilling to confide in those closest to her (her family perceive her as one of life’s copers, while her best friend is away, working in America). Abby feels hurt, confused and unable to move forward in the way she had always imagined she would.

This, for me, was an important starting point. I had read other great novels on the theme of infidelity but often found that the impact of the affair on the central character tended to be sidelined in order to move forward with the plot. In writing Crazy Over You I felt I had something different to offer; the exploration of Abby’s feelings is very much part of the plot. In fact they are the driving force throughout the story.

That is not to say that Crazy Over You is grounded in sadness, far from it. Yes it has its moments but I think this isn’t a subject you can tackle honestly without reflecting some of the impact on those concerned. However, as we follow Abby as she attempts to gain control of her life and make decisions about her future, it becomes very clear that this is as much a story about friendship, family and love as it is of infidelity.

Yes, Crazy Over You is a novel for all those who have experienced a break up, but it is also very much a story for all those who know that living happily ever after is not quite as simple as meeting your man.
