She made her bed. You’ll lie in it.

Rebecca only wanted to help out – to be kind. Richard seemed so alone after his wife, Nicole, died, and Rebecca wanted to make sure he knew he had someone to rely on.

But now she’s in Nicole’s immaculate house. Drinking from her favourite crystal wine glass. Keeping shoes in her orderly closet. Comforting her sweet and grieving step-daughter. It feels like Rebecca is living another woman’s life.

And as she gets to know the neighbours, Rebecca hears stories that make her wonder: was free-spirited Nicole happy in this perfect life, or did she feel trapped? Did she feel, as Rebecca is beginning to, that something wasn’t quite right?

The book everyone’s talking about! If you loved The Girl on the Train, The Wife Between Us and The Girl Before, you’ll be totally gripped and unable to put down this twisty page-turning psychological thriller.

Took me a while to really get into this story, but once I finally twigged what may be going on, I was hooked. Admittedly had I read the blurb at all it may have helped!

Richard appears to be rather unlucky with wives, given he has now been widowed twice.

When Nicola dies, her best friend who lives in France comes to finally meet Richard and tries to work out just what happened in the last few months of her friend's life.

We get chapters from the present and we also see Nicola's relationship with Richard and daughter Olive develop in alternating chapters.

Even what I initially thinking was so far removed from the truth.

I can't say I particularly loved any of the characters, apart from Bouncer, but it was story that grew into itself and finished strongly.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Is he lying? Or is she?

Alicia’s been telling lies. And now they’ve come back to haunt her.

When an old colleague turns up at a party, Alicia comes face to face with the man who has the potential to ruin her perfect family life. He wouldn’t, would he?

In order to keep her secrets, Alicia has to tell yet more lies and when a devastating car accident makes the situation even more dangerous, it’s only a matter of time before everything falls apart. Can secrets really stay hidden forever?

If you loved The Girl on the Train, The Wife Between Us and The Sister, you’ll love this compelling and gripping psychological thriller from Sheryl Browne. The Affair will have you hooked from the very first page!

Wow...I'm speechless...it is just that amazing..

..seriously stop reading this review and just buy the book

... I mean its easily Sheryl Browne's best book to date, and has left me reeling.

...I was so gripped by this that I read it in record time, and even when I paused for a break, my mind was still on it

I can' talk about the plot as I may give spoilers, I can't really discussed the relatable to but fatally flawed characters that get under your skin, as there is so many thread that I may accidentally spoil if I say the wrong thing or phrase it in the wrong way.

In fact Sheryl Brown has written a book that is practically impossible review as everything is so cleverly crafted from the start.  Actually the beginning of the book had me in tears and had me initially wondering if I was really readinga  psychological thriller, but it does all make sense for the genre shortly after that and I didn't mind as the writing was just so powerful.

I felt as though I knew this family intimately by the end and even though I did feel at times I had guessed some elements there were then other shocks thrown in too.

This is addictive, compulsive book that has blown me away.  Clear yourself a few hours where you can lock yourself away from the real world, pick up The Affair and then when you are done you may be able to emphasise with where my head is at the moment - simply superb!

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Book Review - The Babysitter by Sheryl Browne - Rachel Reads Randomly Book #95

Amazon UK
Title:  The Babysitter
Author: Sheryl Browne
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley

Publication Date: 8th March 2018
Rating: 4 Stars

You trust her with your family. Would you trust her with your life?

Mark and Melissa Cain are thrilled to have found Jade, a babysitter who is brilliant with their young children. Having seen her own house burn to the ground, Jade needs them as much as they need her. Moving Jade into the family home can only be a good thing, can’t it?

As Mark works long hours as a police officer and Melissa struggles with running a business, the family become ever more reliant on their babysitter, who is only too happy to help. And as Melissa begins to slip into depression, it’s Jade who is left picking up the pieces.

But Mark soon notices things aren’t quite as they seem. Things at home feel wrong, and as Mark begins to investigate their seemingly perfect sitter, what he discovers shocks him to his core. He’s met Jade before. And now he suspects he might know what she wants …

Mark is in a race against time to protect his family. But what will he find as he goes back to his family home?

From the start you know not to trust the Babysitter, the clue is in the title and the blurb, in fact from the prologue I was 99% positive I had worked out her identity and I would expect most people reading this to get that far in their predictions.

And yet despite being sure you know what the reveal will be, due to the various perspective the book is written from, and the specifics of the story, I found myself drawn into this rather twisted tale, which contained more horrors than I initially anticipating.

We get chapters from Melissa and Mark's perspectives and its amazing how they seemed to be seeing various incidents differently and then there were chapters from the Babysitters point of view, in theory meaning the reader was one step ahead of Mark and his family, but in reality, there are still shocks to be had.

There was just something that seemed to keep the book on my mind constantly until I gave in and sat down to finish it.  It is a story about knowing who you can really trust, whether people really are what they seem, and of some really sloppy police work with one of the most dislikeable colleagues of Mark's that I've met.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Thank you to everyone that voted for this book this week including Snoops who deserves an honorable mention, as you don't often get dogs voting for their favourite books!  This was definitely a book I needed to read so I thank you all for that and look forward to seeing what wins this week.

Introducing Rachel's Random Resources....plus some celebratory #giveaways

We've made it, its September, and if you recall at the start of the summer I apologised that my blog would be a bit less busy than normal potentially, and that I was also working on setting up a new business.

Well the house move went ok, and after a week without internet, I was finally back online, and after two weeks I was fully back in the 21st Century when my new Sky Dish was installed!  Since being back online, I have been incredibly busy and the result is Rachel's Random Resources is now real and as of today live!

Some of you may know that in February 2016 I was working on an internship with Clink Street Publishing, which turned into a freelance job as a blog tour organiser for them. Fast forward to September 2017, and I am finally ready to strike out on my own and organise blog tours, cover reveals, blog blitzes and more, in addition to creating graphics for authors too.

As this is my new business, and I'm hoping my new full time job, I will be charging authors a fair fee for the privilege, but all the while hoping to create a small business that is a friend to both authors and book bloggers.

If you have a blog and love books and would like to follow me on my new journey, and see what fabulous authors I manage to attract the attention of then please do sign up to be a blog tour host.

To any authors reading this, please take a look at my new venture, and if you like the look of what you see, then get in contact with me, and we can look at working together.

And finally to the readers of Rachel's Random Reads, don't worry my blog is going nowhere. I still intend to post incredibly regularly book reviews, guest posts and more. I continually have ideas of new features that I may introduce in the future, and even with a new business to take up my time, I'm a book addict, I will still be reading. And if I'm reading then I'll be reviewing too!

Of course as you may already know I need very little reason to give things away, and today is no exception... I have 3 great giveaways for you to celebrate the birth of Rachel's Random Resources (please enter as many as you wish), so good luck...

....or wish me good luck on what could be my maddest plan to date, or fingers crossed most successful!

Book Review - Sins of the Father by Sheryl Browne - Rachel Reads Randomly Book #58

Amazon UK
Title: Sins of the Father
Author: Sheryl Browne
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Choc Lit
Publication Date: 28th February 2017
Rating: 5 Stars

What if you’d been accused of one of the worst crimes imaginable?

Detective Inspector Matthew Adams is slowly picking up the pieces from a case that nearly cost him the lives of his entire family and his own sanity too. On the surface, he seems to be moving on, but he drinks to forget and when he closes his eyes, the nightmares still come.

But the past is the past or is it? Because the evil Patrick Sullivan might be out of the picture, but there’s somebody who is just as intent on making Matthew’s life hell, and they’re doing it in the cruelest way possible.

When Matthew finds himself accused of a horrific and violent crime, will his family stand by him? And will he even be around to help when his new enemy goes after them as well?

I've barely taken a breath for the entirety of the second half of this book, it has completely had me hooked, and I feel as though Sheryl Browne has completely bamboozled me with what I thought I knew and how it turned out.

This is the sequel to After She's Gone and although in theory it could be read as a standalone, I really think it would be best if you read the wonderful first book first, partly as its brilliant, and partly because it had been over a years since I read it, and I found it hard to re-connect to the characters at first, although things came back to me slowly. For that reason I can't fully judge how much this does work as a standalone.

I have nothing but armfuls of compassion for the incredibly unlucky DI Matthew Adams, so seems to have a knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, with horrific consequences, not just for himself but for the entirety of his family.

We are introduced to the villain of the book very early on, and showed some things from both points of view, but the author was really careful in only giving us snapshots into the world of crazy! This person is cruel, calculated and seems determined to destroy Matthew.

Matthew also suffers from what appears to be crippling asthma, as a mild asthma sufferer myself, I am amazed at just how bad his condition is, but also amazed how often he didn't seem to know where his inhaler was. I make sure mine is always with me, and I barely need it thankfully.

I may though have made one vital mistake reading this book, I was at home alone, and kept thinking I could hear sounds in the house, which just added to the atmosphere of the read, but has left me jumpy as anything, and I am dreading going to bed as I have a feeling this will have an affect of my sleep or dreams! However this should just be seen as a compliment as to just how good this book is, in that it was making me feel that way.

Sins of the Father is a brilliantly crafted story, that ramps up the intensity as the book goes along, culminating in a thrilling finale and kept me guessing to the last few pages.  The book is a pleasure to read at all times (well as much as a pleasure as being scared witless at points, and seeing horrible things happen to people can be), and really does justice to  the continuation of the DI Matthew Adams story.

Thank you so much to Choc Lit and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Thank you so much to Sheryl Browne, and her mad cap sisters on twitter and my comments last week, which put up such a great fight against Kitty French and the Bookouture team, that it made me decide I had to read this book too, instantly. Thank you to those who told me to make sure I had the time to read this in one sitting...took me a couple of sittings but still only half a day so glad you let me know.

The review of the winning vote book has just been posted, alongside this one, and I really hope everyone enjoys both the reviews!

Just a quick note to say the vote will be back, but is taking a temporary break while I sort out my current health issues..nothing too serious but enough to make sorting extra bits for the blog a bit painful at the moment.

Guest Post - Sheryl Browne's Cute Dogs - #CuteChristmas

When Rachel invited me to take part in her cute Christmas feature, how could I resist? People who know me will be aware I write in two genres, sexy heart-wrenching romance and psychological thriller. Apparently, I make a good psychopath. Maybe I just like to explore the dark side? Whatever, I can’t resist writing about love, life and relationships, often looking at family dynamics and what drives people. In my contemporary romance, sometimes I find unexpected characters creeping into the story – and if they didn’t have a starring role in the beginning somehow they end up pivotal to the story by The End.

PC Mark Evans’ story, for instance, which centres around a single father who has a special needs son therefore a lot riding on any relationships he enters into, couldn’t possibly have been told without little Karl’s assistance dog. Meet Starbuck, the ‘star’ of Somebody to Love.

And then there’s Donna’s dog, of course. Meet Sadie, the three-legged brave, beautiful girl who stopped policeman Mark in his tracks, distracting him from the noticing the double yellow lines someone had thoughtlessly parked under Donna’s car.  Needless to say, he did notice Donna.

In The Rest of My Life we have Tobias, a Labrador with hip dysplasia, who is responsible for bringing Adam and Sienna together. Furious though he is at having to leap into icy cold water when Tobias – who can’t swim – falls in, Adam must have some redeeming features to have saved him from drowning, right? Um, no, not at first glance. He’s a bit of a womaniser is our too-hot-to-handle Adam. Can Sienna and Tobias save Adam is the question, by making him realise he’s worth saving? No spoilers, but Adam, Sienna soon realises, does have considerable charms beyond the tousled dark hair, bronzed skin the colour of caramel mocha latte, dark decadent chocolate-brown eyes …

And in Learning to Love … Who could resist Dougal?

You might have realised then that my four legged friends have a habit of worming their way into my heart and my stories. As well as writing, I foster disabled dogs. It’s hard work sometimes, but I wouldn’t me without them.

Thanks so much for featuring my furbabies, Rachel!

Much love & Merry Christmas everyone!

You are of course very welcome Sheryl, and thank you for sharing your clear love of dogs with us. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a lot of success for 2017.

Book Review - Learning to Love by Sheryl Browne

Sometimes help comes from the most unlikely places …
Living in a small village like Hibberton, it’s expected that your neighbours help you in a time of need. But when Andrea Kelly’s house burns down, taking all her earthly possessions with it, it’s the distant and aloof Doctor David Adams – the person she would least expect – who opens his door not just to her, but to her three kids and slightly dotty elderly mother as well.

Andrea needs all the help she can get, dealing with aftermath of the fire and in the suspicious absence of her husband, Jonathan. But, as she gets to know David and his troubled son, Jake, she begins to realise that maybe they need her help as much as she needs theirs …

What a fantastic way to spend a Saturday afternoon, I have managed to read Learning to Love in one sitting, and loved every second of it.  It has everything you could want in a story, from a dishy doctor, village of friends, family with some wonderful children, a dastardly villain and a large helping of drama and action. This is a fast paced story, that will leave you gasping for more.

David Adams has just moved in opposite the Kelly family, with his 10 year old son Jake. They don't have the best of relationships, and the last thing in theory they need is what does happen. For within a few days, the Kelly house is on fire, and David helps rescue Andrea's children and elderly mother. Then offers the family a place to stay, while they get back on their feet.

Friends all rally around to help Andrea and her family, and her two teenage children Ryan and Sophie go overnight from being typical teenagers to reasonably responsible people trying their hardest to help out or at least not make life harder

There is one noticeable exception to this, Jonathan, her fiancee and father to her youngest child. He is absent during the fire, and then doesn't reappear for a few days. Let's just say any bad vibes you get from him once you are introduced to the character, should not be ignored!

I loved seeing the dynamic in the Adams household gradually change, as you learn why it is father and son don't seem overly close, and  how the introduction of the Kellys changes all of their lives. There is an incredibly close friendship brewing and it leaves Andrea needing to make decisions.

I am not going to spoil the finale, but to say it was action packed and drama filled would be the only indication I can give, and I'm so glad I was able to read it all un-interrupted. Learning to Love teaches you how to love in difficult circumstances, and is a wonderful story. Being a huge fan of Sheryl Browne's work, I had been slightly apprehensive as to whether this would be as good as some of her other books, and I can safely say it definitely is, if not better still.

Thank you to Netgalley and Choc Lit for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

Book Review - The Edge of Sanity by Sheryl Browne - Blog Tour

Amazon UK
Title: The Edge of Sanity
Author: Sheryl Browne
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Competition Win
Publisher: Safkhet Publishing
Publication Date: 29th April 2014
Rating: 4.5 Stars

How far would YOU go to protect your family?

A decent, ordinary man, a man who has already suffered the loss of one child, Daniel Conner is forced by extraordinary circumstances into being a hero. Tortured, forcibly drugged—heroin still pulsating nauseatingly through his veins—his wife and daughter degraded, Daniel knows their kidnapper is beyond reasoning with.

But does being pushed one step beyond endurance justify doing the unthinkable?

High on drugs, indebted to his supplier, and desperate, Charlie Roberts takes Daniel's wife and daughter hostage. Daniel does everything within his power to rescue the situation bloodlessly. Eventually though, Daniel realises that with or without violent mood swings induced by amphetamines and cocaine, Charlie Roberts is a psychopath. He wants more than Daniel's money.

He wants him.

The Edge of Sanity: a harrowing story of hope amid loss and betrayal.

The Edge of Sanity pushes the Conner family to the absolute limits of what a person should be able to cope with. Clearly it isn't enough that months earlier they had lost their youngest daughter, and are still clearly all grieving, but are falling apart as a family unit.

Kayla, who is only 15, is really hurting, not just at her sisters death, which she blames herself for, but also at the arguments from her parents. She is rebelling in typical teenage fashion, and with her friend Hannah, going into nightclubs where they are clearly underage.

However on this one fateful night, she finally catches the attention of Charlie Roberts, the hunk she has had her eye on. Little does she know that, that will be one of the biggest mistakes of her life.

For Charlie Roberts is the local drug dealer, a psychopath that is known to the police (who have never made anything stick), and generally doesn't treat women that well. When Kayla lets slip some information, Charlie kidnaps the family, to try and get the biggest payday of his career.

The Edge of Sanity is a gripping story, and the darkest parts of you will be wondering exactly what Charlie is going to do next, to the family. I think its this morbid curiosity that kept me turning the pages eagerly to find out what exactly happens.

There are also revelations about Daniel's childhood that are upsetting, and we also get the perspective of the woman that Charlie had a dalliance with earlier that week. The focus shifts between the various characters which adds to the suspense as you can see how they are feeling.

Sheryl Browne seems to have a scary insight into the mind of a psychopath, as she serves up once again a chilling and suspenseful tale.

Book Review & Giveaway - Death Sentence by Sheryl Browne - Blog Tour

Amazon UK
Title: Death Sentence
Author: Sheryl Browne
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Review copy from Author
Publisher: Safkhet Select
Publication Date: 1st June 2015
Rating: 5 Stars

He's killed your child and kidnapped your wife. What would YOU do?

Detective Inspector Matthew Adams and Patrick Sullivan, drug dealer, pimp, murderer: two men on opposite sides of the law. A history that goes way back. A bully even in his youth, Sullivan had made it his mission in life to make the goody-two-shoes copper's life a misery. Now Matthew has made it his mission in life to make sure the pimping scum responsible for prostituting young girls, abusing them, and beating them to death, is locked up for life.

When Matthew's child becomes a casualty of the war between them, does Matthew want justice? Or does he want retribution? When Patrick's brother is shot down like a dog in a drug bust gone wrong, Patrick wants payback. He wants Matthew. Or the copper loses his pretty, pregnant wife. As far as Patrick is concerned, it's quid pro quo.

Death Sentence: an edge-of-your seat story of revenge.

Death Sentence is about a rivalry, that started in childhood and has progressed into a very dangerous pre-occupation for both men.

There is Detective Inspector Matthew Adams, who is  a respectable policeman, who believes that Patrick Sullivan killed his child. Patrick Sullivan is a nasty piece of work, and bullied Matthew in childhood, is a pimp and drug dealer.  Patrick's brother was shot in a drug bust that went wrong, and so Patrick is out for revenge.

Both men know how to kill, both men are angry and are complete opposites of the spectrum.

We are treated to far more of Matthew's home-life than Patrick. Matthew has a wife, Becky, and they have just decided to take in Matthew's niece Ashley (as her mother is an alcoholic). Ashley is a troubled 13 year old, who has no idea who to trust, but just knows that she doesn't want to be in the care homes any more.

I loved Ashley, she has a certain vulnerability, and hears voices in her head, but knows that if she reveals them that adults tend to think she is crazy. She seems to be very smart, and is determined to help Matthew, even if she initially doesn't understand what is going on.

Patrick is a nasty villain, his only redeeming feature is his love of his daughter. All of women he treats like rubbish, as though they are objects. He is only looking out for his own business interests and is very clearly a psychopath.

Death Sentence flows very well, and is fast paced. I honestly didn't know how either Matthew or Patrick were going to get out of the book alive at one point. Especially since their altercations were personal, and Matthew's job was in danger since he was working emotionally instead of good old fashioned police work.

Death Sentence is a fabulously written thriller. The story gripped me from the beginning, and I needed to know exactly what happened. I was very frustrated when I had to wait to finish the book, just due to running out of commute.

I would love to see a either a sequel to Death Sentence, or another book featuring Matthew and Ashley, as I loved them both so much.

Thank you to Sheryl Browne for the review copy of this book. This was my honest opinion.
