Book Review - Days Like These by Sue Margolis

Amazon UK
Title:  Days Like These
Author: Sue Margolis
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Berkley
Publication Date: 6th December 2016
Rating: 4 Stars

In the new novel from the author of Losing Me, one woman is about to discover what happens when you take the “grand” out of “grandma.”

Recently widowed, Judy Schofield jumps at the chance to look after her two grandchildren for six weeks, while their parents are out of the country. After all, she's already raised one set of children—and quite successfully, if she may say so herself. But all it takes is a few days of private school functions, helicopter parents, video games, and never-ending Frozen sing-a-longs for Judy to feel she's in over her head.

As weeks become months, Judy feels more and more like an outsider among all the young mothers with their parenting theories du jour, especially when she gets on the wrong side of the school's snooty alpha mom. But finding a friend in another grandmother—and a man who takes her mind off all the stress—almost make it worthwhile. She just needs to take it one food allergy, one incomprehensible homework assignment, and one major meltdown at a time...

I'm not sure how many years it has been since I last read a Sue Margolis book, so I was shocked and delighted to see she had a new one out. And then I was scared, just incase my tastes in books had changed so radically that I no longer would like her writing.

Thankfully I didn't need to worry at all, as it didn't take me long to remember why I feel so at home with this author's writing.

The characters of Judy and her mother, Freida, between them are composite of the best bits of my own grandmother.  They are nourishers, supportive of their family, couldn't do enough for their daughters, while also trying to have an active group of friends, and putting others first. In a way this was bittersweet for me, as my own grandmother passed away a couple of months ago, but this has brought the grandmother from my childhood back to life, so I very grateful to Days Like These.

The story revolves around Abbie and Tom's decision to help out in Nicaragua after an earthquake, leaving Judy to look after her grandkids for an initial period of 6 weeks, which soon extends quite a bit further. The children are Rosie who is about 5, and Sam who is 9.

The two children are some of the stars of the story, and most of the action centres around them, how they are getting on in this situation, and just how Judy is coping.

Judy only lost her husband a couple of years back, and her mother Freida moved in to help her with her grief. She is still grieving, but by looking after the kids, they are giving her a new purpose in life and a chance to move on.

What I loved was Judy's thoughts on the private school her grandkids go to, the extra-curriculars, and the different approach she has to things, than the majority of the parents on the school run. She does make friends with another grandma, as well as another mother.

The other star of the book is without a doubt Frieda who I loved. She is the classic hypochondriac and loves using google to look up hers and others symptoms. She loves to cook and taking care of the family, all while moaning about her aches and pains. She also has a tragic childhood, but not one that is unsurprising, given the horrific era she was trying to live through. Frieda more than Judy uses a lot of yiddish phrases, which again reminds me of my own grandparents, although I hadn't ever seen half the words written, I think I may have heard more of them than I first thought.

Days Like These is a wonderful story that spans four generations of one family, three of which living under one roof. There is a lot of humour, as well as the more serious storylines, and the children always keep things feeling fresh. I found Rosie to be very sweet, and Sam was a lot more complicated but hes older to that feels very realistic.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first Sue Margolis book definitely of this decade, and really hope she will continue to write, especially if they are as full of warmth as this one is.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Berkley for this copy of the book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Merry Christmas! - Selection box of Festive Short Story Reviews

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas this year, and if you don't celebrate that you have an enjoyable day regardless.

I'm not really doing much for Christmas this year, so will probably be making in-roads into my TBR piles instead, while hopefully watching some festive films and listening to some Christmassy music!

As it's Christmas Day, I thought I would offer you today a selection box of short story reviews, so that if you do have any time to read today, you can see some of my recommendations, from short stories I have downloaded over the past few months.

Candlelight at Christmas by Katie Fforde - 5 Stars

Amazon UK
It seems to be practically an annual tradition now, that Katie Fforde will release a Christmas short story, and this year is of course no exception. In fact I think I loved this one more than some of the previous ones, purely because I recognised the setting and some of the characters instantly from Recipe for Love.

There is a welcome return to Somerby, where Fenella and Rupert are having a massive friends and family Christmas celebration this year, complete with in-laws, assorted children, and couple of even more unexpected guests.

As the amount of people having Christmas day grows, Fenella is getting a bit more stressed, so once Christmas Day finally arrives, the power cut doesn't help matters.

I loved the solutions as to how they cope with no power over Christmas, and really enjoyed a snapshot look at how Zoe and Gideon were getting on with life, years after we first met them. There is also a very promising and tender romance, between two of the younger extra guests, which was very sweet to read.

All in all a lovely short story that won't take too long to read, but will fill your heart with the joy of Christmas.

Thank you to Netgalley and Cornerstone Digital for my copy of this story that I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Justice at Christmas by M. A. Comley - 5 Stars

Amazon UK
As a huge fan of the Justice series, I was delighted to spot this brand new short story, but when I read the blurb, I did wonder how I'd feel about reading a story set quite a bit before where the series currently is, while a certain character is still alive.

My doubts were short lived as I got into the story very fast, and actually found it to quite a fun little thriller, as its not every day you read about a stampede of Santa's attempting armed robbery!

I loved the plan D.I. Lorne Simkins came up with to infiltrate the Santa's, as well as this reminder as to just how far she has come in the newer books.

For a fan of the series this is definitely a great addition, and up to the usual standards. If you are only just discovering this series or author, then I think its a fun way to get a feel for the writing, and just what D.I. Lorne Simpkins is like.

A hugely enjoyable short story, that took me very little time to read, as I was loving the action.

A Fairytale Christmas by Melissa Hill - 4 Stars

Amazon UK
Delightful short story from Melissa Hill, featuring Christmas, New York and a gentle romance.

Once I worked out who the characters were, I really enjoyed this story, especially the budding whirlwind romance between Mike and Penny.  I also loved seeing some of New York's landmarks at Christmas, as that always feels like a magical setting.

There is a story arc and there is a bit of depth to the characters, which can sometimes be missing from short stories, and it really is a short and sweet story that can be read in under and hour!

A Cornish Christmas Carol by Liz Fenwick - 5 Stars

Amazon UK
Beautifully written re-telling of the Charles Dickens' classic story A Christmas Carol. Believe it or not until I read this version, I had never read any version of the story, despite having seen a lot of the film variants - in fact Muppet's Christmas Carol is my favourite Christmas film.

In Liz Fenwick's story, we still have the three ghosts, and by the middle of the ghost of Christmas past, I was on the verge of crying. The writing just really got to me, and Abigail Scorrier is a woman who is need of this wake up call.

I love that the Scrooge character is female, and she has had a lot varied Christmas's in the past, but a lot of bad things have occurred at this time of year. There is very good reasons why she has become the person she is but it isn't too late for her to right her wrongs.

I loved the comforting nature of a story that is familiar to me, but being told in a new way. The spirits appear while Abigail is on the sleeper train from London to Cornwall, and there is also a sub storyline that is quite interesting about Christmas carols in Cornwall.

This is the perfect story for anyone wanting a new take on an old story this Christmas, from a talented writer. I loved reading every last word in this book.

Comfort and Joy by Cathy Bramley  - 5 Stars

Amazon UK
If you are looking for a story that epitomises Christmas spirit, then look no further than Comfort and Joy, it is one of my favourite stories, and just shows how a community can come together even when things are looking bleak.

This is a wonderfully festive sequel to what was a brilliant book, The Plumberry School of Comfort Food. Comfort and Joy can easily be read as a standalone story, but as someone who has read the original book, I can say it was brilliant as a short story extra. It gives you a sense of fulfillment as you see what the familiar characters are all up to this Christmas in Plumberry.

If you like Christmas food, then you won't be disappointed, as there is a veritable treasure trove of a festive feast within these pages, between the Christmas classes being run at the cooking school on Christmas eve, to Christmas day itself. I especially liked the turkey called Kevin, and what happened to him!

I truly believe that Comfort and Joy will bring you just that, when it is read, its a delightful short story featuring all the warmth and loveliness that Cathy Bramley is becoming very known for, in a bite sized package.

If you have never read a book by Cathy Bramley, then Comfort and Joy is definitely a good taster for her easy to read writing style, as well as a heart warming story.

Guest Post - Twas the Night Before Chick Lit by Geralyn Corcillo

Hi Rachel - Happy Holidays to you and all your wonderful fans on this Christmas Eve. You know, one day in late November, the title "'Twas the Night Before Chick Lit" just popped into my head, and then I just HAD to write it. Enjoy!

'Twas the night before Chick Lit (some really fab books)
Got put onto Kindles, cell phones, and Nooks.
Stockings and garters and heels with a flair,
Were kicked off and traded for the most comfy chair

As women were waiting by the chimney with tea
For elves to deliver the most bookish glee
With gift cards for downloads of ebooks galore
Or actual paperbacks bought in a store.

They just want their novels, these ladies who doze
In front of the fire, cuz everyone knows,
That books are the best when you want a great gift
Because they inspire, amuse and uplift.

Like a lamp in the window you see through the snow,
A good book casts light with a warm, cozy glow.
And women, they know this, as they work and juggle
To do this and that without seeming to struggle.

For when the day's over, they get to their beds
Where visions of heroines dance in their heads
As they read of adventures both wacky and wild
Or sometimes more sober, insightful and mild.

There's something for every manner of  fan
Who loves to read Chick Lit whenever she can.
There's Kinsella or Weiner or Cabot or Keyes
Or Fielding or Fowler or Moyes, if you please.

And more authors out there, as yet undiscovered,
Have stories you'll love and some really cute covers!
So look at the book sites, read blurbs and a chapter
To find your book bliss and relaxation rapture.

For downtime, like Christmas and the days that come after,
Are ideal for indulging in romance and laughter.
So load up your eReader with Chick Lit cheer -

Book Review - All I Ever Wanted by Lucy Dillon

Amazon UK
Title: All I Ever Wanted
Author: Lucy Dillon
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Publication Date: 1st December 2016
Rating: 5 Stars

Caitlin's life is a mess. Her marriage to a man everyone else thinks is perfect has collapsed, along with her self-esteem, and breaking free seems the only option.

Nancy, her four-year-old daughter, used to talk all the time; in the car, at nursery, to her brother Joel. Then her parents split up. Her daddy moves out. And Nancy stops speaking.

Nancy's Auntie Eva, recently widowed and feeling alone, apart from the companionship of two bewildered pugs, is facing a future without her husband or the dreams she gave up for him.

But when Eva agrees to host her niece and nephew once a fortnight, Caitlin and Eva are made to face the different truths about their marriages - and about what they both really want . . .

What a wonderfully heart warming and loving story, about one family, as they are going through a tough patch.

When Patrick accepts a job in Newcastle, Caitlin refuses to uproot their children to move up there with him. For Patrick this signifies that it is time to move on and they split up.  Caitlin around this time starts to see her husband in a new light, and he really doesn't come across that well in the early part of the book.

Joel is 10 and loves acting, he is very talkative and is a wonderful big brother. Nancy is almost five, but once her dad moves out, she stops speaking. It's a heart breaking problem and although they are fairly sure it is stress related, noone seems to know the best way to get her talking again. She used to by all accounts be a happy go lucky child, always singing and dancing along with Joel, so its very noticeable how quiet she is now.

Thankfully Nancy will still communicate just without words, so can get her feelings and some of her thoughts across, and I think if anyone is having a similar dilemma with their own child may take a bit of comfort from this story.

Caitlin arranges for the kids to see Patrick at weekends at their aunt Eva's house. Eva is the other main focus of the book, she is recently widowed, childless and has barely had anything to do with her young niece and nephew, but she lives a reasonable distance away from the husband and wife.

As much as Nancy is the main focus of a lot of the book, I loved hearing more about Eva's relationship with her beloved Mick., and the question as to whether his memoirs should be published or not. I also enjoyed seeing Eva's relationship with Joel and Nancy develop over time.

I regularly state that my favourite Lucy Dillon books feature dogs, and so I was delighted to meet Bumble and Bee, Eva's pugs. They are small and cute, and play a steady role throughout the book, but more importantly they are key in quite a few of the largest, most important scenes in the book.

Caitlin loves getting a bit of freedom, and Eva also has a new acquaintance who I was hoping things would develop with, however Patrick is always very quick to criticise if anything goes wrong.  And of course there are some "situations" involving the children that are quite funny, and definitely memorable, one including a bath, and one including some errant animals in a back garden!

I found All I Ever Wanted to be an engaging look at one couple's family dynamics along with their aunt, Caitlin's mum who drives her slightly mad and of course the pugs, as they navigate the problems caused by a separation. I found it sympathetic to Nancy's plight and I spent a large amount of the book really rooting for her, and hoping things would change. I felt involved with the story at all times, which was easy to follow and very enjoyable to read.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Hodder for this copy of the book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Book Review - Bertie's Gift by Hannah Coates - #CuteChristmas

Amazon UK
Title: Bertie's Gift
Author: Hannah Coates
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Publication Date: 20th October 2016
Rating: 5 Stars

For fans of A Streetcat Named Bob and Buster the Boxer, this is the heart-warming, inspirational story of one cheeky little dog and his beloved sister, two grumpy cats, and a family at Christmas.

Bertie is alone, devastated after his beloved sister and fellow beagle Molly is adopted, leaving him behind. When Bertie is taken in by the Green family, it seems he's finally found a place to call home...

Yet Bertie swiftly realises that the kind and loving Green family is in crisis. After a tragedy two years ago, they've never recovered - and as Christmas approaches, grief is pulling them apart.

Never has a four-legged friend been more in need - and brave, warm-hearted Bertie must rise to the challenge. Can he enlist the help of hostile felines Kitty and Rico to help him find Molly - and can he bring the Green family back together again, all in time for Christmas?

Emotional and adorable I think are the key words to describe Bertie's Gift. Written from Bertie's point of view, we are taken on a harrowing tail of his long term owner's grief, a dog shelter and then his new home...

He has always been close to his sister Molly, but when they are taken to the dog shelter, the two loveable beagles are split up and adopted by two very different families. All Bertie wants is to be reunited with his beloved sister.

And in trying to find her, he enlists the help of some unlikely friends at his new house. In the mean time his new family are also struggling emotionally, and Bertie is also wishing he could do more to try and get the various family members to talk to each other.

When I started Bertie's Gift I wasn't expecting for me to be unable to put it down, and for me to lost in the pages for the following three hours while I read this story. It grabbed me from the first pages, and tugged my heart in all angles, to the extent I was pretty much in tears by the end.

I was so impressed by how much Bertie and his canine and feline friends got under my skin, and I really felt for all of them. Bertie is a young dog, and doesn't mean to get into as much trouble as he seems to, but sometimes just can't quite control his natural doggy instincts.

Bertie's Gift is a wonderful heartwarming story, about man's (and woman's ) best friend, and just how loyal dogs are to each other and to their humans. This I feel would be a fantastic book to give as a Christmas present to an animal lover, or to anyone that loves brilliant books.

Thank you Hodder and Netgalley for this copy of the book which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Guest Post - Sheryl Browne's Cute Dogs - #CuteChristmas

When Rachel invited me to take part in her cute Christmas feature, how could I resist? People who know me will be aware I write in two genres, sexy heart-wrenching romance and psychological thriller. Apparently, I make a good psychopath. Maybe I just like to explore the dark side? Whatever, I can’t resist writing about love, life and relationships, often looking at family dynamics and what drives people. In my contemporary romance, sometimes I find unexpected characters creeping into the story – and if they didn’t have a starring role in the beginning somehow they end up pivotal to the story by The End.

PC Mark Evans’ story, for instance, which centres around a single father who has a special needs son therefore a lot riding on any relationships he enters into, couldn’t possibly have been told without little Karl’s assistance dog. Meet Starbuck, the ‘star’ of Somebody to Love.

And then there’s Donna’s dog, of course. Meet Sadie, the three-legged brave, beautiful girl who stopped policeman Mark in his tracks, distracting him from the noticing the double yellow lines someone had thoughtlessly parked under Donna’s car.  Needless to say, he did notice Donna.

In The Rest of My Life we have Tobias, a Labrador with hip dysplasia, who is responsible for bringing Adam and Sienna together. Furious though he is at having to leap into icy cold water when Tobias – who can’t swim – falls in, Adam must have some redeeming features to have saved him from drowning, right? Um, no, not at first glance. He’s a bit of a womaniser is our too-hot-to-handle Adam. Can Sienna and Tobias save Adam is the question, by making him realise he’s worth saving? No spoilers, but Adam, Sienna soon realises, does have considerable charms beyond the tousled dark hair, bronzed skin the colour of caramel mocha latte, dark decadent chocolate-brown eyes …

And in Learning to Love … Who could resist Dougal?

You might have realised then that my four legged friends have a habit of worming their way into my heart and my stories. As well as writing, I foster disabled dogs. It’s hard work sometimes, but I wouldn’t me without them.

Thanks so much for featuring my furbabies, Rachel!

Much love & Merry Christmas everyone!

You are of course very welcome Sheryl, and thank you for sharing your clear love of dogs with us. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a lot of success for 2017.

Guest Post - Christmas Dog by T.A. Williams - #CuteChristmas

There are two question that I keep getting asked. Seeing as there’s always a black Labrador in my books, the questions are:

   Why the Lab?   and

   Which is my favourite Lab?

The answer to the first is easy, the second not so easy. The reason there’s always a Lab is because of good old Merlin. We got him as an abused child and he’d had a horrific first year of his life. He was pitifully thin and the vet told us he might live to 4 or 5. In the end, he managed to stay with us until he reached the ripe old age of 13. He wasn’t just a good dog, he was an exceptional dog and, if you believe in reincarnation, he must have been somebody really, really great. So, slipping a black Lab into my books is my homage to him.

The answer to the second question isn’t so easy, because all the Labs in my books share certain characteristics.

In common with all Labs, they all suffer from an eating disorder. When I say disorder, I mean they can’t stop eating. They are always hungry, and food disappears like magic when offered to them.
They are all very good listeners. Now, I know we men aren’t supposed to be very good listeners and, I suppose I would have to admit that I’m not great. At least, that’s what my wife says. My Labs, on the other hand (or paw), are great listeners. Not great conversationalists, I must admit, but they’ve definitely got the listening thing off pat.

They all offer solace and support. Merlin was the expert at this. If anybody in the house was feeling a bit down, the big black head would appear at their side. A heavy, hairy chin would rest on their thigh and a pair of soulful brown eyes would look up sympathetically.

Choosing a favourite isn’t easy. So, here goes, in time-honoured tradition, I’ll give them in reverse order:

3. In third place, Noah from my first book, Dirty Minds. Apart from an unfortunate tendency towards flatulence, and the fact that he dribbles whenever Chocolate Hobnobs appear on the table, he was a very good dog.

2. In second place, Dante the Italian Lab from What Happens in Tuscany. Dante, as well as the supportive thing and the listening thing, had the uncanny knack of suddenly appearing every time Katie set out on a walk. He never needed a lead, never bit the postman, never ran in front of cars and was always a reliable friend and companion.

1. But, in first place, it has to be Stirling from What Happens at Christmas. The thing I love most about him is his devotion to his dead master, Holly’s dad. Holly finds Stirling lying on an old sweater belonging to her father and it brings a tear to her eye. She takes him to the pub and he leads her to her dad’s favourite table. He forms a real link between her and the father she didn’t really know.

I’m a sucker for dogs and I love them all so it’s been a difficult choice. Anyway, if you want a Yuletide Canine fix, I would suggest you give Stirling a try.

A very happy Christmas to my good friend Rachel and to you all.

And a very Merry Christmas to you too. I love your labradors in all your books, so clearly I need to read Dirty Minds to meet Noah, and Merlin is a cutie too.

About T.A. Williams
My name is Trevor Williams. I write under the androgynous name T A Williams because 65% of books are read by women. In my first book, "Dirty Minds" one of the (female) characters suggests the imbalance is due to the fact that men spend too much time getting drunk and watching football. I couldn't possibly comment. Ask my wife...

I've written all sorts: thrillers, historical novels, short stories and now I'm enjoying myself hugely writing humour and romance. Romantic comedies are what we all need from time to time. Life isn’t always very fair. It isn’t always a lot of fun, but when it is, we need to embrace it.

I’m originally from Exeter, and I've lived all over Europe, but now I live in a little village in sleepy Devon, tucked away down here in south west England. I love the place. That’s why you’ll find leafy lanes and thatched cottages in most of my books. Oh, yes, and a black Labrador.

My most recent books, published by Harper Collins, are the What happens… series. What happens in Tuscany reached #1 in the Amazon.uk Romantic Comedy chart recently and What Happens on the Beach, the last in the series, came out in July. I’ve just finished writing two more romcoms, the first one, To Rome with Love, coming out next February and I also have a timeslip romantic thriller, Chasing Shadows, coming out in March, so it’s going to be a busy time for me.

Book Review - Baxter's Christmas Wish by Sharon Booth - #CuteChristmas

Amazon UK
Title: Baxter's Christmas Wish
Author: Sharon Booth
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Purchased
Publisher: Fabrian Books
Publication Date: 7th October 2016
Rating: 4 Stars

When Ellie Jackson's marriage unexpectedly ends, she and her young son, Jake, seek refuge with Ellie's cousin, Maddie. But Maddie soon tires of her house guests, including her own boisterous rescue Boxer dog, Baxter.

A trip to the park proves eventful, when Baxter literally bumps into Dylan. Kind, funny, and not-too-shabby in the looks department, Dylan soon wins Ellie and Jake over, and Ellie dares to dream of a happy ending at last.

But as the snow starts to fall and Christmas approaches, Ellie realises time is running out for them. Dylan clearly has a secret that may ruin their happiness, Baxter's home is in jeopardy, and she has no way of making Jake's wishes come true.

Must Ellie give up on her dreams, or can Baxter lead her back to happiness?

Light the fire, switch on those Christmas tree lights, curl up with a hot chocolate, and enjoy this heart-warming festive story of love, home, and second chances.

Baxter is a loveable Boxer dog. Sure he can be a little naughty but that is when he gets bored, and you really need to feel sorry him, as his last owner gave him away free to a new home. Now that new home just happened to be Maddie.

Maddie loves a sob story, she had already taken in her cousin Ellie, and her son Jake, when Ellie's marriage falls apart. However she is already starting to find they may be overstaying their welcome, but she still can't resist Baxter's story and takes him in too.

This is despite her not really knowing anything about dogs, and having a boyfriend who is fed of of Ellie and Jake and doesn't like dogs either.

Ellie and Jake really take to Baxter luckily and start taking him to the park on walks to try and burn off his energy. Its during one of these walks he bowls over Dylan, and so enters the romantic interest for the book.

Dylan loves dogs too, but he is clearly hiding things, and I must say at least one of the various things he was hiding, I did guess. However the others although surprising in some respects, I could completely understand too.

I found Baxter's Christmas Wish to be a very sweet story, with Baxter as the absolute start of the book, and any scene he wasn't in I was still hoping he was ok, as in his young life he really wasn't having much luck with owners and all he, and any dog ever wants is his forever home.

This is quite a quick story to read, and I read it in a couple of short hours, while loving every moment of it. Some of the scraps that Baxter gets himself into are incredibly funny, and I loved the way he was around not only Jake, but Dylan's dog Tyson, a small yorkshire terrier. I was kept engaged in what was going on at all times, and also quite liked the chapter titles that gave a hint as to what may be about to happen in the immediate future.

Pleasurable story with the dogs pretty much leading the relationships and romance, while the human stories are also good too!

Guest Post & Giveaway - Lady P does Christmas by Nicola May - #CuteChristmas

‘Cali big tits, Cali big tits.’

‘Lady P! Not today please, there’s too much to do!’ Cali Summers threw a strand of silver tinsel towards her pet’s cage. ‘And, if you dare start saying that in front of my mother on Christmas Day.’

‘No, no, no, no, no, no,’ the African grey parrot shrieked and starting diving around her large cage.
Cali laughed. ‘What? Is silver not your colour?’

***
So, that’s my owner, Cali Summers;  30’ish, prettyish, kind, caring, straightforward and naive where men are concerned.

She pretends she’s cross with me most of the time, but I know she loves me really. Fresh food and water every day proves that, and when she’s sad she talks to me too. On and on and on she goes. About her husband leaving her for Bella Bitch, their personal trainer and then boring me about her job as an Events Manager in a hotel.

And, when it’s not that,  I tell you, she  makes my claws curl with some of the things she’s got up to with men in this flat. It’s since she’s been part of this Tinder dating internet lark, you see. She’s gone a bit crazy with it. And, it’s a good job I can use my discretion sometimes and keep me beak shut or her mother would definitely have a funny turn.

So, despite trying very hard to meet someone to spend Christmas with, it hasn’t happened yet? So, we are spending it this year with her mum, dad, brother, his vile wife Petra and their even viler dog, Snoop, who does nothing but terrorise me for the whole day. I am going to peck his nose off this year so help him, if he dares winds me up.

I don’t like it when she’s sad though. That’s when I have to throw out the ‘I love you Callerina card.’ That makes her smile and when Cali’s happy, I’m happy.

Ooh she’s unloading her bags now, any cuttle fish in there, love? I mean it is Christmas. Here come the mince pies, she loves mince pies. And, sherry. People laugh at her because she likes sherry. I shout ‘wanker’ if they do that. I don’t like them laughing at her.

‘Look what I’ve got for you.’ Cali rustled about in the bag.

‘Get ’em out! Get ’em out!’

‘Lady P, I’ve warned you.’

Ha, ha I knew that would wind her up. But look, banana chips and fruit cup jellies. Yes, perlease...

Raising a glass of sherry, Cali places a couple of the treats in the bottom of her errant bird’s cage.

‘Cheers, Lady P and Happy Christmas to you.’

The African grey cocks her head to the side nonchalantly. ‘Jingle Balls, jingle balls, jingle all the way.’

You too can read more about Cali and Lady’s P’s antics in Nicola’s eighth novel, Love Me Tinder; available to download now with the Paperback release on Valentine’s Day.

Her Christmas novella, Christmas Evie won an award for the Best Author Read at the 2013 Festival of Romance and is also available to download now.
