Lucy Draycourt loves her job – or so she keeps telling everyone – but her friend, Beatrix Welsley says Lucy needs to ‘find herself’… so they’re going to Beatrix’s, Aunt Petunia’s wedding. Lucy can’t see how this will help, and besides, she doesn’t need to find herself. Just because she was given away at birth doesn’t mean she’s ‘lost’. Who cares that she was adopted? Her childhood was perfect so it doesn’t bother her. Or does it? Is her search for recognition really a search for something else? And is there any chance she’ll find it at Petunia Welsley’s wedding?
Evan Foster needs a break. He’s done nothing but work for several years and his life is frankly, a mess. The invitation to Uncle Bartram’s wedding has come at the perfect time. Or maybe not. Two years ago, Evan’s fiancĂ©e ran off with his business partner and it’s now abundantly clear that they’re not coming back. Evan needs to make plans for the future, but it’s difficult to move forward when you’re still living in the past.
But as Petunia Welsley, the bride-to-be would say: ‘You can’t see the sun if you’re staring into clouds. Sometimes all you need to do is take a step in a different direction and you’ll be walking on sunshine.
Short but incredibly sweet return to Hideaway Down in Walking on Sunshine, which shows that the author can write engaging novellas just as well as she writes full books. Although this is shorter than the others in the series, its no less enjoyable to read, and condenses the main romance into a story that takes place over a week.
Walking on Sunshine can easily be read as a standalone book, but it far more enjoyable to read the entire series, as I have loved all the books so far in it. It was a lovely return to Hideaway Down, and catching up with all the regular characters, including the Gaggle Gang.
Lucy, Beatrix and Evan are new characters and they are who the book focuses on, especially Lucy, who is initially a hard working lawyer who rarely takes a holiday, and the thought of a week in the countryside, is not really working for her. However after the first night she soon relaxes into the pace of life, and may just have eyes for a certain man.
There are definitely some laughs to be had, and the writing is sharp and to the point, the descriptions are very strong and overall I loved my return to Hideaway Down. There is a fair amount packed into the story, including sun burn, a drunken night out, a confused morning after and a fortune teller, all of which relate to very specific incidents in this charming tale.
Thank you to Emily Harvale for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
As always Emily Harvale is treating my followers to a fabulous giveaway.
