Jules Wake's Christmas Q&A - Blog Tour - #HarperXmas

I am delighted to be part of the From Paris With Love This Christmas blog tour, and would like to thank Jules Wake for joining me on Rachel's Random Reads to answer this bunch of festive questions.

What is your favourite Christmas film?

My absolute favourite Christmas film is Serendipity, it combines all the classic elements of the festive season in New York, the shops on Fifth Avenue, ice skating in Central Park and snow falling on the divine John Cusack.  What I really love, and what sets it aside from other Christmas films, is that it has that extra touch of sparkle when the hero and heroine are brought together through the magic of fate.  It’s a fairy tale story which contains all the classic elements of Christmas.

If you could only listen to one Christmas song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I never tire of hearing Wizard’s I wish it Could be Christmas Every Day. It brings back memories of Top of The Pops and its such a lovely,  shouty, celebratory track announcing that it’s time to have fun.

What is your most treasured Christmas tradition?

Without a doubt, decorating the tree.  Wherever I’ve lived, at home with my parents, abroad or with my own family now, this is the one time that we batten down the hatches and all get together and devote time to being a family and doing something together.

As a child, the whole family and my mum’s best friend had to be present before the tree could be decorated and now with my own children we’ve continued this tradition.  Everyone has to be at home. The lights go on first and then we unwrap all the decorations which have been brought down from the loft in readiness, and then we all decorate the tree together, after arguing about which sequence is best for the lights on the tree.

If you were one of Santa’s reindeer, which one would you be?

Prancer – there would be no point being a reindeer if you didn’t get to do some prancing.

What is the best Christmas gift you have ever received?

I really shouldn’t be mercenary about this, but a couple of years ago my husband bought me tickets to see Journey, my all time favourite, favourite rock band.  It was a complete surprise and as they are American (and knocking on a bit)  I never thought I’d get to see them. I have to admit … I cried!

What is your opinion on mistletoe?
Come on! I write romantic fiction, what do you think?

What is the best Christmassy beverage?

Champagne cocktails. My husband makes a really mean one, Angoustura Bitters, Brandy, a sugar cube and Champagne.

When is the appropriate time to start listening to Christmas music?

We have a lovely Christmas CD which was produced by the local performing arts school and every year this comes out about a week before Christmas and we listen to it in the early evening with a glass of wine in front of the fire.

How long after Christmas Day do your decorations stay up?

They always come down before twelfth night, usually in time for everyone to go back to school and it always feels rather sad.  However we do go through all the Christmas Cards when we take them down, reading them all and then cutting them up to make tags for next year’s Christmas presents.

If you could ask Santa for one thing bigger than a dog but smaller than an elephant, what would it be?
A big dog.  For the last couple of years we’ve been talking about getting a dog but the timing wasn’t right because of our day time commitments but that’s gradually changing, so who knows, maybe this year will be the year of the dog.

About Jules Wake

Despite early ambitions, my path to being a published novelist took a diversion when after reading English at the University of East Anglia, I ended up in the glamorous and deeply shallow world of PR, and I spent a number of years honing my fictional writing skills on press releases.

In my head I’m a winning contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, a competitive skydiver and a domestic goddess. Unfortunately in reality I can’t dance, or sky dive and dust bunnies gather in every corner of my house but in my fun, romantic comedy, my heroines can be anything they want.

Book Review & Giveaway - The Kiss Before Midnight by Sophie Pembroke - #HarperXmas

Amazon UK
Title: The Kiss Before Midnight
Author: Sophie Pembroke
Format reviewed: Ebook

Publisher: Harper Impulse
Publication Date: 13th November 2014
Rating: 5 Stars

Heading home to Liverpool for Christmas, Molly Mackenzie isn’t just looking forward to the mulled wine and mince pies – she’s got high hopes for who she’ll find under the mistletoe this year!

Unable to forget the delicious near miss with her brother’s best friend, Jake, last New Year’s Eve, Molly’s got a new resolution at the top of her list: seduce Jake and get this crazy chemistry out the way before it has serious repercussions on the rest of the Mackenzie family.

Only Molly has underestimated the magic of the holiday season… The more stolen moments in the snow that she shares with Jake, the more determined she is to make it a whole lot more than just a kiss before midnight.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without the festive warmth of a heart-meltingly romantic novella from Sophie Pembroke!

The Kiss Before Midnight is a warm, romantic story, full of sexual tension, and the love of a good family around you.

The previous News Year Eve, Jake and Molly shared a kiss, and it now seems as though it has been on both of their minds for the whole year. The problem is Molly then moved to London to try and be less flaky, and Jake doesn't want to upset Molly's family as they are as close to him as his own were.

So when they find themselves sharing all sorts of moments this Christmas, it makes them think. Throw in the magic of the festive season, a very cozy family Christmas in the Mackenzie household, and various sibling's opinions on the situation, and you have this fabulous novella.

I loved the writing in this story, and I really felt like I was a part of the Mackenzie's Christmas celebrations. I certainly want to read Sophie's other Christmas book A Kiss Before Christmas, as I think its the story of Dory's romance, who is Molly's older sister, and I hope there is a third book to focus on Tim's story (Molly's brother).

If you are looking for a short heart warming Christmas story, then this is definitely worth checking out.

Giveaway to win a paperback copy of The Kiss Before Midnight (Open Internationally)

Sophie is very kindly offering a copy of The Kiss Before Midnight to be won for #HarperXmas.

Giveaway open internationally, all options are voluntary, but please do what they ask, as I will be verifying the winner. Giveaway closes 23:59 13/12/2015. Winner will be announced on twitter and emailed, and they will need to reply within 7 days, or forfeit the prize, and I will re-draw for a new winner.  Good luck everyone.

Just until Christmas…

That’s what Paris socialite Siena keeps telling herself. She’ll hide away in her sister Laurie’s cottage near London to escape her hot-tempered fiancé.

However, when Jason – gorgeous but a bit of a Grinch – picks her up from the airport, he reveals that Laurie hasn’t lived there for months, complicating Siena’s holiday getaway.

At first, Jason and Siena don’t see eye to eye. But after a weekend in the most romantic city in the world, experiencing all it has to offer – from the magic of a fir-lined Champs-Élysées, lit up by thousands of sparkling fairy lights, to the swoosh of skates on ice at the Eiffel Tower – Siena shows Jason her Paris, and a whole other side to herself. Suddenly Siena’s December deadline seems far too close…

This Christmas, jet off to Paris with Siena and Jason and experience the magic of the holiday season

Another cracker of a book from Jules Wake. I was absorbed in this story right from the beginning, and the second my memory kicked in fully to remind me of the meeting between Laurie and Siena in From Italy with Love, it became even better. As I did remember Siena, I just couldn't fully place her at first.

Although this does feature small parts by characters featured in From Italy With Love, this is definitely a standalone book, with a whole new cast, and is set predominately in England, but there is a trip to Paris in the run up to Christmas that is brilliant.

Seeing Siena guide Jason around Paris is superb, and she is full of surprises throughout the book. Siena shows Jason some of the big sights, some excellent views, and also some of the bits of Paris that she knows well.

As I say Siena is surprising, not only was she continually making Jason rethink his initial opinion of her, but I was becoming more and more impressed by her, by ever passing chapter. The development of Siena's character reminds me a lot of Rachel from Friends, over the 10 series, going from reasonably clueless about the world outside the privilege she grew up in, to becoming a well rounded determined young woman.

I loved how Jason slowly changed too, and as a reader you are probably a few steps ahead of either of  them, with their feelings for each other. You can see the connection deepening and the changes in Jason towards Siena are lovely.

Wonderful story set in the run up to Christmas, with some great festive touches including glittery pine cone Christmas decorations, and Siena's ability to keep cool in a crisis, once she has found a job she can do is inspiring,.  We slowly learn the reason for Siena's appearance in England, at short notice, and I can't say I blame her.

I think I preferred From Italy With Love, but this comes a very close second to me, in the books I  have read by Jules Wake. It may have been missing the cross-Europe road-trip but it features Christmas, and so much more, that I didn't mind.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and Harper Impulse for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

Book Review - A Very Country Christmas by Zara Stoneley - #HarperXmas

A short Christmas story of three courses.

Love is in the air in Tippermere as Lottie dreams of a white Christmas with no trimmings – other than her hot and hunky eventer, Rory. But things are never quite that simple on the Tipping House Estate.

Festive fervour takes over and it isn’t all seasonal peace and goodwill as expectations rise and it soon escalates from cosy dinner for two, to all the trimmings for ten!

With missing turkeys, loose horses, troublesome terriers and randy huntsmen, Lottie is hard pushed to find time for a kiss under the mistletoe, let alone find the opportunity to woo Rory with her sexy Santa costume.

But there is only one thing Lottie really wants for Christmas, and only one man can deliver it…

A Very Country Christmas is a look at Christmas in Tippermere. All your favourite characters (apart from Mick) are present, in this celebration of Christmas, set a few months after Country Affairs finished.

Lottie is intending to have a cozy Christmas for two with Rory this year, until the season of goodwill over takes her, and she ends up with a crowded house. Highlights include anything to do with the turkey (named Terrence), and the exploits of the slightly disgraced huntmaster.

As always at the start of this there is a guide to the characters you will see featured in Tippermere, so that even if you haven't read either of Zara's previous books, you still get a good idea of who is who and how they are related.

It is split into three sections, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and Christmas Eve was possibly the weakest in terms of overall enjoyment, but was all vital set up so that the rest of the story would make lots of sense, and be even more entertaining.

I felt so at home reading this, I didn't even mind that it was a short story. Sometimes short stories really bug me, but this one was just like an extra few chapters to a normal book, but with a standalone story that was highly enjoyable.

Guest Post - How To Do a Mini-New York Christmas in One Day by Lynn Marie Hulsman - #HarperXmas

From Left to Right -
1. These are my sparkly gold shoes for upcoming holiday parties
2. This is the tree outside Lincoln Center. We always take the kids to The Big Apple Circus in December when they set up on the plaza outside near the famous fountain
3. Here’s the Rockefeller Center skating rink, right beneath the giant tree
4. My daughter visiting Santa Claus at a mall across the Hudson River in New Jersey. My son a little afraid to approach!

No place beats New York City as a romantic vacation destination for the holiday season. From the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, to The Radio City Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, to visiting Santa at Macy’s Santaland at the historic flagship store on 34th Street, to carriage rides through Central Park, the city is a showcase of iconic destinations.

If you’re only in The Big Apple for a brief visit, I have a plan to make the most of one “Big Day.”

First stop: Le Pain Quotidien French Bistro for a Café au Lait and a Chocolate Croissant
http://www.lepainquotidien.com/store/bryant-park/#.VltsPc74ulI

A rich, bracing cup of coffee and a little burst of butter and sugar will start your busy day right. LPQ has wonderful full breakfasts, too, but be careful about eating too much, because you’ll want to save room for wares from the food stalls at Bryant Park’s Winter Village.

Stop Two: Bryant Park’s Winter Village
http://wintervillage.org/visit/hours

The ice-skating rink at Bryant Park is much more accessible and far less crowded than the famous one at Rockefeller Center. Bonus: It opens at 8 a.m., and if you go early, you’ll practically have the run of the place. I suggest skating first to make the most of your day, then hit the shops and stalls when they open at 10. Wander under the gorgeous, giant decorated tree, situated in front of The Bryant Park Grill, and purchase one-of-a-kind, and unique gifts for the folks back home. From clever housewares, to New York-themed souvenirs, to handmade scarves and tree ornaments, there’s something for every taste. And when you get hungry for a midmorning snack, indulge in small bites ranging from extra-thick Italian hot chocolate, to curried stew in a cup, to grilled Panini.

Tip: While you’re there, visit the public bathroom on 42nd Street near 5th Avenue. They’re the cleanest in NYC. While small, they feature fresh flowers and automatic plastic seat-cover changing technology.

Next Stop: The Public Library, Main Branch, with the Lion Statues
http://www.nypl.org/locations/schwarzman

You might remember this building from Ghostbusters or you may just be a book lover. Or maybe you’re a fan of architecture’s Beaux Arts period. Regardless, a photo by the lions is a New York must. While you’re drinking in the history, stop by the gift shop to purchase literature-themed umbrellas, decks of cards, tote bags, and even books for the bibliophiles in your life.

Next Destination: 5th Avenue between 42nd Street and 57th Street, Store Windows

From Lord & Taylor, to Saks, to Bergdorf Goodman, and all the great shops in-between, the boat is pushed out as designers compete to create the most eye-catching displays with the most intriguing themes. Prepare to stand behind velvet ropes to take your turn to drink in the most popular windows. But even that is a treat: The destination is part of the journey. Being part of the enthusiastic crowd adds to the holiday excitement!

Next Stop: St. Patrick’s Cathedral
http://saintpatrickscathedral.org

You don’t need to be any particular faith or creed to appreciate the beauty of this 130-year-old American Gothic Revival-style church in which the Godfather’s  baptism scene was filmed, and in whose rectory F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald were married. Take a quiet moment away from the hustle and bustle to reflect and to feel grateful for how great your life must be if you are able to take a dream trip to New York at Christmas time.

Next Stop: Rockefeller Center
http://www.rockefellercenter.com

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the iconic gold statue of Prometheus beckoning you off 5th Avenue. Nip into the plaza to view the shops, the Sea Grill, the gargantuan tree, and the ice-skaters. You could get lucky like my sister-in-law did a few years back, and get to see a couple get engaged right on the ice!

Next Stop: Tea at The Plaza Hotel
http://www.theplazany.com/dining/palmcourt/

Few places decorate like The Plaza, and few places do such a fancy tea. Reserve in advance so you can enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience in The Palm Court. Revel in the décor, and fill yourself full of scones, tea sandwiches, and wedges of cake.

Final Stop: Central Park

You need only cross the street at 57th Street to be in the world-famous Central Park. Take a stroll, or hail a horse and carriage as you wrap up your day. By the time you get back to your hotel, and lay your head on the pillow (remove the chocolate first!), you’re sure to have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head!

From Left to Right
1. My son and daughter in front of the tree in our building’s lobby.
2. My daughter at the M&M store in Times Square trying to make a choice. We wound up with red, green, blue, and white
3. My daughter near Radio City Music Hall, by the giant-sized Christmas lights
4. We often go to NYC’s museums over the holiday school break. Here were are at the Museum of Modern Art. My son is not amused by the “Don’t Touch” rule
Thank you so much Lynn for this wonderful whistle-stop tour of New York at Christmas. I love all the photos too.

Extract & Giveaway - Every Time a Bell Rings by Carmel Harrington - Blog Tour - #HarperXmas

I am delighted to be closing the blog tour for Every Time a Bell Rings by Carmel Harrington. My review was posted on Friday, and I happily gave it five stars. So today I have for you an extract from the book, and I also have a copy of the book to give away.

My eyes greedily take in the view ahead of us, down Grafton Street. Red, flickering lights coil around luscious green garlands, which drape from one side of the street to other. In the centre of each garland is a large red Victorian lantern and the light casts a warm glow over the busy cobbled street. Each shop window is alight with Christmas lights and resplendent baubles in rich jewel colours.

There’s something about the energy here … well, it is breathtaking.

I’m not the only one who feels that. I can see it on the faces of people as they rush by too, with their pre-Christmas festive highs.

Okay, maybe not so much on that guy's face, I giggle, as a harassed man in his forties rushes by. Last minute shopper, I decide. Poor sap. I’ve mine all done and dusted since October. I wouldn't dream of leaving it to now. But aside from the odd scowling face, the street is awash with a sea of shiny, happy people.

"Look over there." I shout in excitement as I spy a window display with a group of reindeers nibbling on fake grass in the snow. Then another scene catches my eyes and I’m darting over to the other side of the street, pulling Jim behind me.

“Earlier, when you said happiness is …" Jim waves his hand around the Christmas card view in front of us, "is all of this what you meant by happiness?"

"Well, obviously lots of things make me happy. But this, well it’s up there with the best of them. I love everything about Christmas. You must feel it too? Doesn't it feel like we’re in a Christmas movie right now?" I exclaim.

"Oh a blockbuster for sure." He drawls. "Aside from twinkling lights, which I know you’re a sucker for, what else makes you happy?"

I reckon the feel of my hand in his, as we walk through the frenzied crowds is top of my happy list right now. But a girl has to hold some cards to herself, so I remain silent.

"I want to know. Come on Belle. What else makes you happy?" Jim persists.

"Oh a lot of different things. Not having to set the alarm on Saturdays and Sundays. Peanut butter on hot toast. But don't be giving me cold toast. I can't be doing with rubbery cold toast." I say.

"A shootable offence that?" He asks and when I nod, he says, "I'm taking notes here. This is good intel."

"Well, while you're at it, add to the list that not spreading said peanut butter to all corners of the toast is equally damnable. I can't be doing with someone who just smears it on willy nilly, not giving due consideration to all parts of the bread." I tell him.

"Got it. Take care when smearing peanut butter - evenly - on piping hot toast. What else makes your ladyship happy?" He says, tipping his hat in mock salute.

"I love starting a new book and then realising that's it’s one of the good ones. The kind that I am not going to want to finish." I say.

I think some more and add, “Oh and dancing. Any kind, but preferably one that involves a lot of bum shaking is guaranteed to make me smile."

Jim raises his eyebrow so I reward him with a little shake of my bum.

"See. Look how happy my dancing makes you too." I tease, and he bursts into laughter.

"Oh you can be assured that your bum makes me happy," he declares giving it a pat and I thank the stars that I stuck at the squats this summer in the gym.

"You’ve not mentioned swinging." Jim states.

"How very dare you. I’m a respectable lady I’ll have you know. I've never left my key ring in anyone’s fruit bowl." I feign outrage. I know what he's referring to, but it’s still fun teasing him.

He starts to splutter an explanation then he realises my game.

"Yes Jim Looney, I still love swings. I can’t pass by a park without seeing how high I can go." I admit. "And I do some of my best thinking when I’m up there chasing the clouds."

"You were always the same." He remembers. "I was more of a slide man myself."

I remember him always trying to climb up the slide, rather than use the ladder and me begging him to push me higher and higher on the swings. That was a long time ago though.

He pulls me to the side of the street, out of the lane of traffic and looks searchingly into my eyes.

"What about me? Do I make you happy?"

I’m surprised to see that my confident, laid back boyfriend looks like a ten year old boy, suddenly unsure of himself.

Without hesitation, I take his hands between my own and tell him, with the utmost sincerity, "You, Jim Looney, make me happiest most of all."

My friends would be horrified that I’ve laid my heart bare so early on in our relationship. I know that I probably should play a little harder to get. But I’ve never been any good at hiding how I feel.

"You get what you see with my Belle." Tess always says. Heart on sleeve territory.

Well, he’s getting a complete, hopelessly devoted to you, kind of lovestruck feeling from me right now.

He gives me the strangest look. Damn it, I've frightened him off.

"You're full of surprises." He says after a moment of tortured silence and you’d swear he was just seeing me for the first time.

"You ok?" I ask and my stomach flips. That strange look is back on his face. It worries me.

"So much has changed since I left, but then some things, are just as they were when I said goodbye." He murmurs. "It’s disconcerting."

"You’re getting all reflective in your old age." I poke him in his side. "Now enough of that, come on admit it, Brown Thomas gives Macy's a run for its money, doesn't it?"

"Absolutely, it’s not half-bad.” He acknowledges in his slow half Midwestern, half Irish drawl, and we pause to take in the decadent window displays.

"I really think it’s the most beautiful street in the world." I murmur. "When I stand here, I feel like a child again."

As we move from window to window of the department store,  Brown Thomas’s, I have the most wonderful sensation that I've been engulfed in a big Christmas hug. Mannequins draped in Victorian clothing, bejewelled with pearls and glittering gems, stand and sit in displays, dressed with snow, fairy lights and dazzling Christmas trees. I lean back into Jim’s embrace and nuzzle my head into the crook of his neck.

Oh, I love how he smells. I've spent some time on this subject and have decided that it's a mix of spice and cinnamon and oaky leathers. He actually smells a bit Christmassy.

And then his arms wrap around my body and I think he’s just so … I struggle to find the right word and then giggle when it comes to me. He’s just so manly, yes that’s the word.

I catch a glimpse of us in the reflection of the window display, me giggling and him smiling in response, even though he has no idea why I’m doing so and I don’t think I’ve ever felt luckier.
I notice a few people looking at us. I'm used to that, the gawping that is. The foxy haired Irishman with a Midwestern US drawl and the caramel skinned Amazonian woman, with black afro hair and Dublin accent. An unlikely pair maybe, but we somehow fit perfectly.

When I stand by his side, he makes me feel prettier than I’ve ever felt with any other man. It doesn’t hurt that at 6" 4 he can make my 5’10 tall frame look almost petite. Well, maybe not petite, that’s probably a stretch.

And never mind how he looks, it’s how he makes me feel that has me undone. Ever since our amazing first kiss, I crave him, there's no other way to describe how it feels than that.

I mean, I was doing very nicely without him for the past ten years, thank you very much. Now I cannot be without him.

Is this what true love feels like? Did Cinderella feel like this when she met her Prince Charming? I hope so.

What happens when he goes home to Indiana after Christmas though?

There’s that nasty inner voice again. Shut up. I refuse to even think about anything more than in this moment. And to prove that point I turn to face him and kiss him passionately, with all my being. I don’t care who is watching and it appears, as his tongue makes its way towards mine, that he doesn’t either.

"Ahem." A voice coughs and we pull apart to see who is trying to get our attention. It’s the dapper concierge of Brown Thomas. He’s wagging his finger at us, but he's smiling, there’s no sting to his rebuke. He just wants us to move away from the front of his store.

"Sorry about that." Jim tips his head towards him and we start to move away. "Let’s go get some of that mud pie you keep going on about. I think I’m gonna need to keep my strength up with you."
I wave happily to the concierge and he waves his top hat to me, shouting, "Merry Christmas, lovebirds."

The chocolate pie tastes as good as I remember. Jim suggests sharing a slice, but I put that notion to bed straight away.

“I’ll add the no sharing of chocolate treats to my list.” he jokes.

When we leave Captain America’s, sated and giddy with sugar, we stop, listening to the sounds that tinkle in the air.

We walk slowly up to Stephen’s Green and take a stroll around the park. It’s quiet there and we walk in comfortable silence.

Book Review - The Boy Under The Mistletoe by Katey Lovell - #HarperXmas

A gorgeously romantic short story, part of The Meet Cute series.

Every Happily Ever After began with a Once Upon a Time…

After working a busy Christmas Eve shift at her family's flower shop, Chelsea can barely keep her eyes open for her Gran's annual festive get-together. Can her Christmas dreams come true under the mistletoe?

The Boy Under The Mistletoe is the Christmas release belonging to Katey Lovell's Meet Cute series. All the books in this series are stand alone, snap shots as a couples first romantic meeting.

This is a bite sized, coffee break book. I started it as I started dinner, and still had food left when I finished it. If you are looking to get a quick fix of romance, then I would recommend this.

You get a bit of a family Christmas party, and a great idea of  Katey's talent, while being able to enjoy a festive fairytale.

Although I would happily read others in the Meet Cute series, if I needed a very fast read, I am eagerly looking forward to seeing what this author can do in a longer setting.

Thank you to Katey Lovell for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

An angel gets its wings…

Belle has taken all the Christmas decorations down. This year they won’t be celebrating.

As foster parents, Belle and Jim have given many children the chance of a happier start in life. They’ve loved them as if they were their own. They shouldn’t have favourites but little Lauren has touched their hearts. And now her mother is well enough to take her back and Belle can’t bear the loss.

Hence, Christmas is cancelled.

So when Jim crashes his car one icy December night, after an argument about Lauren, Belle can only blame herself. Everything she loves is lost. And Belle finds herself standing on The Ha’Penny Bridge wishing she had never been born.

But what happens to a Christmas wish when an angel is listening…

Will Belle realise, before it’s too late, that her life is the most wonderful life of all?

Inspired by the timeless tale of beloved Christmas movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, Carmel Harrington’s next book tells the story of Belle, a young woman and foster carer from Dublin who faces the hardest decision of her life this Christmas on The Ha’Penny Bridge.

I was mildly apprehensive going into this book purely because I knew it was inspired by It's A Wonderful Life, which is one of the classic Christmas movies I have never seen. I need not have worried as clearly you need absolutely no knowledge of the film to enjoy this book, and it's also dawned on me that I have seen a different film that is also based in parts on key scenes from It's A Wonderful Life.

This is such a beautifully written book, and such a fabulous story that will tug at every emotion you have, and will also hopefully make you feel that your own life has worth and meaning too.

Every Time A Bell Rings I believe can be read and enjoyed at all times of the year. Yes it has an emphasis on December and Christmas, but it will get under your skin, and be a book to read whenever and wherever.

It has been split into 3 main parts, which by the end of the first part I was already in tears, and then had to take a short break from the book to compose myself properly to be able to continue reading. The prologue is a lovely way to open the book, and although it felt a bit longer than your average prologue, it really did give you a feel for some of what was to come in the book. And then it lead into part one, which was Belle and Jim's childhood.

I found their childhood moving, fascinating, and also shows that childhood friendships can stand the test of time.  For Belle and Jim are certainly soul mates, even if later in the book you do start to despair for the couple. All of the talk of fostering from Belle and Jim's childhood to the children they take in themselves are very interesting, and in the case of Lauren, I was as attached to her as Belle. I was about as heartbroken as Belle, when it was time for Lauren to leave. I loved the concept of forever homes and forever children, and honestly wish that if I am ever in the position to foster children that I could do it even half as well as Belle, Jim and Tess.

When you read Every Time A Bell Rings make sure if at all possible you can read it in one day and not need to interrupt the reading. I made that mistake and had to go out second after the car crash (mentioned in blurb so can't fully be a spoiler!) and spent most of the evening wondering if Belle and Jim were ok. And do make sure you have some tissues handy generally while reading this.

I sometimes struggle with books where there are angels, but thankfully I had no such issue with this book. It felt such a natural progression of the story, and Nora the angel is utterly believable. Admittedly while Belle is making her key wish, hearing Kermit the Frog's voice from It's A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, saying the exact same lines was a bit off putting, but that is obviously not the books fault, just a parallel that occurred to me, at the most inopportune moment!

I have no idea how Carmel Harrington keeps coming up with these beautiful, life affirming books but I am so glad that she does. The characters are so well written I could see them, and I could believe this would work wonderfully as a film (yes I know it is inspired by one, but this would be a great film as well!)

Thank you so much to Harper Impulse and Netgalley for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

You’ve seen Mark Darcy in the reindeer jumper his mother gave him, now meet Marco Cavelli in this season’s hottest Christmas knit!

For single mum Maggie, Christmas has always been a family occasion – her daughter Ellen filling the house with her bubbly warmth and mistletoe, her dad Paddy having one too many festive tipples, and the traditional family Christmas tree looking like a drunken elf vomited a rainbow all over it.

But this year, with both Ellen and Paddy away for the holidays, Maggie’s facing a truly blue Christmas – alone with nothing but a bottle of Baileys and an M&S turkey dinner.

Until walking the snowy streets of Oxford, Marco Cavelli quite literally crashes into her life – and, complete with broken leg, becomes her unexpected houseguest. All dreamy brown eyes and 6’5” of gorgeousness, the man is hotter and more delicious than a freshly baked mince pie.

Though Maggie always thought it’s a truth universally acknowledged that you never kiss a man in a Christmas jumper?

This is a really enjoyable festive romance, that is so much more than what it first seems. It has tear jerker moments, as well as humour, some very different weddings, a host of Christmas jumpers, a gorgeous man and just a few broken bones!

Maggie has spotted Marco Cavelli around Oxford a couple of times, each time wearing a Christmas jumper, and has found him attractive. And then in a freak bicycle accident they crash and somehow Maggie agrees to have Marco as a house guest while he recovers from his crash.

Maggie had daughter Ellen very young and is a single mother, and this year both Ellen, and Maggie's father are going away for Christmas, leaving Maggie slightly despairing. But before that she has 3 weddings to attend, and 3 wedding dresses to finish off, for the brides to wear.

There are some lovely descriptions of Oxford, and you get a real sense of the picturesque university town, and especially the part of it where Maggie lives, Jericho. Maggie acts as a part tour guide to Marco, pointing out things he should visit, if he has time while he's there.

Marco's family are warm hearted and loving and just full of life, and great characters, as is Marco, a man trying to recover from a broken leg, and he is used to being a lot more self reliant and physical than he currently is. We also from time to time get to see what he is thinking and its clear he may think more of Maggie than it first appears.

I did notice there was at least one nod towards Bridget Jones, that was't a gorgeous man in a Christmas jumper, and when I spotted it, I just had to smile, but also started to well up and goose bumps too!

Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Jumper is easy to read, well paced, and has some absolutely beautifully emotional scenes, and is a great romance for this time of year!

Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Impulse for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

In just over a month, Debbie Johnson's next book will be published, her first for Harper Collins, titles The Birthday That Changed Everything. It is available now for pre-order in both ebook and paperback. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.

Guest Post - Teresa F Morgan talking about Pantomimes - #HarperXmas

Thank you, Rachel, for inviting me on your blog today! Christmas can be about family traditions and I’m here to talk about mine.

My family tend to get the playing cards out at Christmas, but there is one thing I have started with my children once they were old enough to appreciate it and that’s going to the pantomime.  Oh yes it is!

I have fond childhood memories of my dad taking my brother and me to the panto at Christmas, and I wanted my boys to have these same memories. My dad comes with us every year too, so it’s something they’ll remember doing with their granddad too.

Weston-super-Mare has its own theatre. The Playhouse is smaller than the Hippodrome in Bristol, but more comfortable, and so far we’ve enjoyed every pantomime. The boys love the booing and the hissing, the ‘he’s behind you’ and the ‘oh no it’s not, oh yes it is.’ And one year, Ben was lucky enough to get up on stage at the end and win some goodies.

I always book early – September! – to ensure we get great seats.

When I was writing One Fine Day, I needed Steve (aka Stuart) to take Lydia on a date to the theatre. He’s an Hollywood actor and wanted to avoid the cinema, in case his face showed up on a trailer for his latest movie. However, the time of year One Fine Day is set, I realised they would only be able to watch a pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome. , and so I decided it would be fun if they also took Lydia’s two nieces. It was lovely to recall on my own memories to write this scene and show how Steve’s character interacted with kids, and those awkward questions. It ended up being a really fun scene to write.

What are your family traditions? Do you visit the pantomime at Christmas?

Thank you so much Teresa, for agreeing to feature on Rachel's Random Reads. I also used to love Pantomimes, especially as a child, I would still go now, but feel I may get looked at funny without a small child with me, to justify going along. However one of these years I will go see an adult panto, to remind myself what fun they really are!

About Teresa F Morgan

I live in sunny Weston-super-Mare, trying to hold onto my Surrey accent where I was born and bred.

For years I persevered with boring jobs, until my two boys joined my nest. In an attempt to find something to work around them, and to ensure I never endured full time boredom again, I found writing.

I am at my happiest baking cakes, putting proper home cooked dinners on the table (whether the kids eat them or not), reading a good romance, or creating a touch of escapism with heroes readers will fall in love with.

One Fine Day

Just a boy standing in front of a girl…

Actor Steve Mason has it all … gorgeous looks, the perfect starlet girlfriend hanging on his arm and his name on every Hollywood producer’s lips. That is, until it turns out the ‘perfect girl’ is actually a perfect PR stunt! Dumped and with his name plastered across every tabloid headline, Steve decides to head home to England, questioning if he’ll ever find a woman who genuinely loves him for who he is, and not just his place on the Sexiest Man Alive list.

It’s been fifteen long years since Ruby last saw her big brother – but the new LA version of Steve complete with designer wardrobe, California tan and an American accent is too much to bear – Ruby hardly recognises him and decides it’s time to get her brother back!

With Ruby’s help, Steve goes undercover as he plays the part of a regular guy who leads a regular life. And then one perfectly fine, ordinary day he meets lovely, funny, down-to-earth Lydia. But when Hollywood comes calling, will Steve be able to leave both Lydia and his little sister behind?
