Could Meadowbrook Manor be the country escape she is looking for…?

It’s been a year since Meadowbrook Manor was transformed into a boutique hotel, and things are running smoothly for the Singer family, who own it.

When they receive a call from Brooke Walker, a 25-year-old woman who wants to swap the sunny shores of California for a quintessential English experience at their hotel, the Singers are delighted to be able to accommodate her for a two-month stay.

Brooke is focused on starting a business in the UK, and wants to discover more about her ancestors from Somerset. She quickly integrates into the day-to-day running of the hotel, lending a hand and becoming a firm friend to both the staff and residents.

But there’s something Hotel Manager Pippa can’t quite put her finger on – is there more to perfect, bubbly Brooke than meets the eye, or is she simply a young woman desperate to start afresh and leave her troubles behind?

In the past few months every time I picked up a book featuring a group of close siblings, I had found myself wishing, or thinking they were the Singer family, so I was delighted to be able to get my hands on The Ticket To Happiness and be reunited with this wonderful family.

I am completely hooked on this series, and although it can probably be read as a standalone, you'd be missing out on two equally great books  by doing so.

From the first few pages, of chapter 1, i felt like I had come home. The prologue introduces us to a new character, Brooke, who is key to this book, and its various plot points, and was interesting, but it wasn't until a few pages later and I was back in Meadowbrook, that I truly settled.

I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing how everyone is progressing, now that the hotel  has been running a year, and seeing the latest happenings in all the various family members relationships.

This book was mainly focused on Pippa, and how she relates to her family, and also to their new long term guest Brooke.  Brooke is essentially miss popular around Meadowbrook, seems unable to put a foot wrong, she loves animals, is good with children, she loves fitness, is quite creative too, and eager to learn vegan cooking from Gwen too.

In short she appears to good to be true. Pippa at times seemed suspicious of her, and I was too, but I also had a very strong inkling early on what if anything Brooke may be hiding, , so some of the end section didn't come as a total shock, but it didn't matter as I was enjoying the journey getting to that point.

For fans of the series the big question on everyones lips is whether Pippa will ever meet a man who is able to treat her right, or perhaps even see what could be right under her nose. There were a couple of options in this one, but I whole heartedly agree with the direction she went with.

This is just a fabulous story of family, new friendships, keeping the hotel running,  a big story featuring the animal sanctuary, as well as seeing how all the siblings develop.   I loved seeing Harriet learn to deal with being a parent to Toby, to Gus finally realising Fleur is growing into a young woman, and Freddie working out what just being in a committed relationship is all about.

With laughs and good times to be had, this is one story I am sad to say goodbye to.  I just have everything crossed that this isn't the last we see of Meadowbrook and the Singer family.

Visit Meadowbrook this summer for sunshine, secrets and plenty of romance…
When Gemma Matthews is hired to transform Meadowbrook Manor into a boutique hotel, she can’t believe her luck.

She packs her bags and moves to Meadowbrook to start her dream job, but her life is quickly turned upside down. From dealing with the petty squabbles of the dramatic Singer
siblings to cleaning up donkey poo, Gemma soon realises she has her work cut out for her. Neverthless, she’s
determined to make the hotel a success, especially when she starts falling for the dangerously attractive Freddie Singer.

But Gemma has a secret she’s desperate to protect, and she knows the truth could jeopardise everything…

Such a delightful story, that was incredibly enjoyable and really transported me away from the heatwave and back into the lives of the Singer family.

This could be read as a standalone as plenty of back story is included, but having read the first book, I will say this is a lovely sequel, and I was delighted to be back among familiar characters.

We are introduced from the start to Gemma who has been hired to help the family convert Meadowbrook into a hotel - just one snag, all the siblings have greatly different visions for the place, and it takes a while for Gemma to get used to the infighting of the family, their fierce loyalty and general zaniness of all the local villagers too.

I loved every moment of this story, it is written in such a warm loving way and I was really fond of all the characters - although I did have to wonder if the romance I was predicting would ever happen - as I could see it a mile off even if the characters couldn't

This is s book that made me both laugh, smile and also in places feel rawer emotion, with Gemma's storyline with her nan.   As I got to know Gemma the more I tended to kiek he but I did wonder just what she was hiding from time to time.

I am really hoping that this isn't the last we have seen of Meadowbrook and the Singers, I would love to be reunited with them again, especially with the developments in the epilogue!

It is great to see Faith Bleasdale back to her best, and whatever she writes next I am looking forward to reading it.

Book Review - A Year at Meadowbrook Manor by Faith Bleasdale - Rachel Reads Randomly Book #92

One divided family, one life-changing year…
Harriet Singer hasn’t been home in ten years. When her beloved dad dies suddenly, she races to be there for her estranged siblings, despite the memories it brings back.

Then Harriet learns that all four Singer siblings must live together for one year, caring for their dad’s Animal Sanctuary, or forfeit their inheritance.

Living under the same roof could make or break the family, but it’s time Harriet stopped running and faced her past. Especially when her first love turns up…

Faith Bleasdale is back with a bang! This is the first book I have noticed published by the author for about a decade (my maths may be slightly off), but I recall loving her back in the 00's so was delighted when this book appeared on my radar as a new release.

After such as gap I did wonder if my memory was playing tricks on how much I enjoyed previous books by the author, but thankfully my instincts are spot on, this is one fabulous book, and I am delighted to see what appears to be a sequel available for pre-order already!

The Singer siblings used to be very close as kids but now as adults they haven't spent as much time together as they would have liked. So their fathers last wishes somewhat shock them, but the aim is to bring them back together as a family, in order to get their full inheritance.

The siblings are all rather different there is the ambitious one, the dull one, the party animal one and the married one - well based on first impressions at any rate, until you get to know them as the story progresses and I found they were a wonderful group of siblings.

What I loved most as the animal sanctuary and the stories behind all the various animals staying there, such a varied menagerie of creatures looking for new homes. They were all adorable and it was hilarious to see how the privileged Singer's were going to get their hands dirty in the day to day running of the sanctuary.

There is plenty of drame to keep everyone entertained, some completely hilarious moments often involving the "celebrity" who is used to help drum up publicity,  and is a heart warming story of family loyalty, relationships and new beginnings.

Thank you to Avon and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Thank you to everyone that votes for this book last week, I did pick this from the tie, as I was getting really curious to see what the authors writing is like now, and based on a couple of comments about the other book up this was tied for, I know I will enjoy that one once I do read it!  So what is my book for next week? Well take  a look and let me know.

Rachel Reads Randomly Vote #8

Thank you everyone for your input last time. The results of the last vote were:

6 Votes - Dashing Through the Snow by Debbie Macomber
9 Votes - Christmas for One by Amanda Prowse
9 Votes - Mistletoe and Mayhem by Catherine Ferguson

This has been the busiest week yet on Rachel Reads Randomly votes, and thank you so much everyone that has taken part, Hope you all continue to the bottom of this for this weeks choices. As it was a tie, it was down to me to decide which to read, and I opted for Mistletoe and Mayhem by Catherine Ferguson, purely because I haven't got around to reading her summer release this year despite really wanting to, and that I have already read an Amanda Prowse Christmas book this season. I do intend to read Christmas for One, but just haven't got there yet.

For the next few weeks, the selection is going to be taken from my Christmas books section of my spreadsheet, and because I don't have massive amounts, there will only be 3 choices to vote from, so I can have a bit of variety in what comes up each week, as I'm continuing my campaign to not only read all of the Christmas books that I want from this year, but to clear last years back log too!

Below is initially my theory for this feature, and then a bit further, what you are all waiting for... This weeks's vote!

I am also awful at deciding what book to read next, as I often have about 10 titles or authors jumping into my brain at any time, shouting at me to read them, and I tend to worry I have made the wrong decision while reading a perfectly good book. I am hoping this will save me having to make at least 1 choice a week, while possibly providing a review to the site of a book you all either love or are curious about yourselves.

So what I am proposing, is my lovely loyal readers of Rachel's Random Reads, select one book for me to read a week, and I will post the review the following week.

How is this going to work? (not editing this for Christmas, only the numbers change, everything else is the same)

Every Monday, I am going to have a post like this, which is going to have some choices on it. I am planning on using random.org to select 7 random numbers, to coincide with my spreadsheet of unread books.

I will from that produce a list of hopefully 5 books, I reserve the right to veto any books, and will give reasons for them, if it occurs.

I will take screenshots and post them, of the chosen books, and also give you my instinctive reactions to the choices (without checking blurbs or any other info about them, which could be interesting as there are probably many forgotten about books on my spreadsheet!).

Your task is to post a comment on this post, with the book you would like me to read this week. At midnight on Wednesday I will take a tally of the votes and the book with the most, I will read and review for the following Monday, where you will also get a new choice post.

In the event of a tie, I will chose which one appeals most, for the Monday review, and possibly try and read and review the other to appear when I can.

I am hoping this will provide some variety to the books appearing, and will let me potentially read or discover some great authors that I have wanted to read but not got around to yet.

On the assumption that some of this makes sense, I will without further ado, load up the randomiser and see what the options are for this week.

This weeks random numbers are...

And the books these numbers correspond to are...

Books without a number, have a reason by them, mainly because they have been reserved for a future date, so need to have the reviews posted on more specific dates.

So the 3 choices with my gut feeling responses are:

12 - Mishaps and Mistletoe by Tilly Tennant - I've been meaning to read this since last year. I know its a short story, but I have the omnibus edition of Mishaps in Millrise (which I believe follows on from Mishaps and Mistletoe), so if this wins, I may read both!
4 - Mistletoe and Wine by Faith Bleasdale - I read Faiths books around 10 years ago so was excited to see she had a new Christmas novella out.
6 - The Art of Christmas by Jane Lovering - This is the new Christmas novella by Jane. I have loved other books by her, so very curious to see how she does a story with Christmas in the title.

Well it had to happen at some point from my Christmas selection spreadsheet. These are all novellas or short stories that I would like to read in the next few weeks. I'm going to be very curious who wins this week, as I don't have a gut feeling on it  I have decided to make the next few weeks of this Christmas weeks, to help get through the numbered books on this bit of my spreadsheet. There is bound to be some variety in what's up each week, as I buy more to replace ones I have read!

Please everyone have a say this week, as I'd love to know your thoughts. Pick your favourite or the one you most want me to review, or just the one you are curious about, and leave me a comment below, before midnight on Wednesday.

I look forward to seeing what I will be reading over the weekend, courtesy of you all.
