All of our favourite characters from Cockleberry Bay are back in this final, heart warming story in the series. Including Hot, Rosa Smith's adorable dachshund and his new-born puppies.

Now successfully running the Cockleberry Café and wishing to start a family herself, Rosa feels the time is right to let her inherited Corner Shop go. However, her benefactor left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it.

Rosa is torn. How can she make such a huge decision? And will it be the right one? Once the news gets out and goes public, untrustworthy newcomers appear in the Bay . . . their motives uncertain. With the revelation of more secrets from Rosa's family heritage, a new journey of unpredictable and life-changing events begins to unfold.

The Gift of Cockleberry Bay concludes this phenomenally successful series in typically brisk and bolshy style and will delight the many thousands of Rosa's fans.

How wonderful it was to be back in Cockleberry Bay with all my favourite characters. Although I'm sad that this is the last instalment in this trilogy, equally this is a perfect last book for the series.

All loose ends are wrapped up, in a book that starts with high drama that I couldn't tear my eyes away from, assorted secrets and at times I wasn't even completely sure who would be gifted the shop in the end, although I'm ecstatic with the decision Rosa made.

I recall when I started the second book, I just couldn't quite connect with it instantly, so i was nervous going into this one, worried that I'd not remember the characters or just feel not quite right with it. Thankfully I had no such qualms this time, I jumped straight into the action and read the whole book far too fast.

I just couldn't get enough of it, and there are so many story lines, deeper issues, funny moments, and heart warming moments, that had me on the edge of my seat and kept me reading continually.

If you haven't read anything from this series yet, well I'm sure this could be read as a standalone but honestly go back and read from the first one, all three books are incredibly strong, and just really impressive.

I loved the way Rosa decides to work out who to gift the shop to, it's inspired! And then there are the new puppies who are adorable and i loved their names, not to mention Hot the Dog is back, I love that little sausage dog!

This really is everything I could have hoped for in a book, written in an engaging way that had me hooked, and well I don't want to spoil anything about the details for you, rest assured if the blurb and this review has even slightly piqued your interest, then you really should read it.  It's that great.

I loved every single word of this book, it took me on a bit of a roller coaster of ups and downs, not just for Rosa but other recurring characters,  and I am gutted that I have to now say goodbye to the residents of Cockleberry Bay.

I'm now waiting impatiently already to see what Nicola May will write next as I know I will be wanting to read it!

Thank you to the author for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily,

The cast of the runaway bestseller, The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay, are back – including Rosa, Josh, Mary, Jacob, Sheila, new mum Titch and, last but by no means least, Hot, the adorable dachshund.

Newly wed, and with her inherited corner shop successfully up and running, Rosa Smith seems to have all that anyone could wish for. But the course of true love never did run smooth and Rosa’s suspicions that her husband is having an affair have dire consequences.

Reaching rock bottom before she can climb back up to the top, fragile Rosa is forced to face her fears, addiction and jealousy head on.

With a selection of meddling locals still at large, a mystery fire and Titch’s frantic search for the real father of her sick baby, the second book in this enchanting series will take you on a further unpredictable journey of self-discovery.

It was fabulous to be reunited with my favourite little sausage dog Hot, and his owner Rosa, new husband Josh, Titch the best friend, and all the residents of Cockleberry Bay.

It didn't take me long to feel quite at home again with all these characters and the little town. and there are enough hints as to what happened in book 1 that I believe it should be readable as a standalone.  At any rate it helped me remember elements from the first book which I had recalled loving but couldn't think of the specifics well over a year later.

Wow there is a lot happening in this book, never a dull moment, but ultimately it is a journey of self discovery for Rosa, who really felt slightly out of control at the start of this book.  I kept willing her to have some self realisation, and I loved the way it all resolved itself.

I actually can't believe how many threads of stories were weaved into this epic book. I loved every moment of it.  There was high drama, emotion, laughs, secrets, romance, dogs and a whole lot more besides.  It's just rather impressive writing,

I really felt as though I was alongside all the characters, they just felt so real, and I love how Rosa is a flawed main character.  Always makes a nice change to have realistic characters to get to know and that this book has in abundance.

And the setting of Cockleberry Bay is lovely, I could really picture the town, and all its inhabitants.

A worthy sequel to The Corner Shop on Cocklebery Bay and I really hope this isn't the last we will see of the series.

Thanks you to Nicola May for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Rosa Larkin is down on her luck in London, so when she inherits a near-derelict corner shop in a quaint Devon village, her first thought is to sell it for cash and sort out her life. But nothing is straightforward about this legacy. While the identity of her benefactor remains a mystery, he - or she - has left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it.

Rosa makes up her mind to give it a go: to put everything she has into getting the shop up and running again in the small seaside community of Cockleberry Bay. But can she do it all on her own? And if not, who will help her succeed - and who among the following will work secretly to see her fail?

There is a handsome rugby player, a sexy plumber, a charlatan reporter and a selection of meddling locals. Add in a hit and run incident and the disappearance of a valuable engraved necklace – and what you get is a journey of self-discovery and unpredictable events.

With surprising and heartfelt results, Rosa, accompanied at all times by her little sausage dog Hot, will slowly unravel the shadowy secrets of the inheritance, and also bring her own, long-hidden heritage into the light.

Hooked me in from the first few pages, and as the book progressed well it was under my skin and I kept thinking about it when I wasn't reading, until I decided to just give in and read most of the second half in one sitting.  I just didn't want to put it down, I was so absorbed by Rosa Larkin's story.

There is far more to this book than meets the eye, I know what you are thinking, its another shop with inheritance books, some conditions stuck on it, and moving to a new place sort of thing.   Well yes the book does contain that but its the way the story proceeds from there that is what makes it so special.

I loved Rosa who has had a tough childhood, and never really been that responsible suddenly has a shop, her own home and a new village to become who she was meant to be.  She has her problems, but also is very determined to make this unexpected gift a success.

She also has Hot the Dog, otherwise known as Mr. Sausage who is utterly adorable and isn't far from the action at all.  He is an adorable dog and certainly understands the W word that all dogs love!

This is a romantic comedy so you may be wondering why I haven't mentioned men yet, and that is because for a large amount of the book although I knew who my heart was going to set Rosa up with, there were many other prospective males, so I don't want to name any of them, and leave you to fall in love with one yourself, while potentially being disgusted by others.

I love the group of friends that Rosa starts to make, and there are some real characters that live in Cockleberry Bay, including the owners of The Lobster Pot, Queenie, Titch, and a few others who may not be as pleasant.

There are laughs to be had, some sadness, and overall I was left utterly bereft that my short time in Cockleberry Bay was over so soon. I loved the book that much, and want to be back there with my new found friends already.  Incredibly well written, this book has completely got under my skin, highly recommended.

Thank you to Nicola May for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Book Review - Star Fish by Nicola May - Back Catalogue Books - #AroundTheUKIn144Books #Berkshire

Back Catalogue Books is my new regular Saturday feature, focusing on books that are not the latest releases. There is going to be a mix of Q&As and also reviews, depending on what I have the space for.

If you are an author wanting to take part in Back Catalogue Books then please do email on gilbster at gmail dot com and I'll whizz the questions over to you.

I hope everyone enjoys this weekly look back at some of the slightly older books that are about but still great, and that I eventually make a dent in my TBRs as a result of it!

Given I have an interview with Nicola May today, I thought it would be fitting to read one of her back catalogue too. I had five unread books by her sitting on my kindle, and as we all know I am rubbish at making decisions, to my bestie Alison picked for me, and I have to say she picked well!

Amy Anderson has a plan: to find her ‘soul mate’ by dating her way through the twelve signs of the zodiac.

Tired of looking for love, the dreamy Piscean decides than an astrological dating agency is the only way to meet the man of her dreams.
Who will finally win Amy’s love? Will it be Ted the Arian photographer with a passion for ice skating, or Laurence, the Libran IT whizz kid who likes to get behind the wheel of a fast car?

Or how about Capricorn Chris, the owner of Starr & Son, the dating agency?

I love romantic comedies that have a heavy dating element, and the idea of trying to date your way through the twelve signs of the zodiac really amused me, even though I am not sure that I believe in astrological compatibility.

The first thing that struck me about Star Fish, was Amy and her base similarities with myself. We are both pisces, we are both single and had I read this book a month ago we would have been the same age, so I automatically felt an affinity with her.

As a result I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her friends, and seeing her hilarious dating antics. She even finds a dating agency that matches people based on star sign, so all she has to do is pick the men, and see where the fates take her.

We are introduced to all manner of men, in a variety of creative dating scenarios. Some of them I liked a lot more than others, and then there were the absolute nightmares but of course they had the most sexual chemistry with Amy.

I also loved meeting Amy's huge group of friends, there is a good variety of personality types within them, and generally they are all great. They are all supportive in different way's of Amy's dating mission, and during the course of the book we learn about their romantic journeys too.

Each chapter starts with a horoscope, either for Amy, or a potential date, which sets the tone for the chapter. I really enjoyed Amy and all of her quirks, although I noticed a distinct lack of frogs in her smelly pond, even though she seemed to like her frogs and her pet cat!

In a book that features ice skating, weddings, go karting, incredibly ugly rich men with speech impediments, horse racing, embarrassing incidents and all manner of other antics, I was very amused the entire time, and really enjoyed the experience of reading Star Fish.

Back Catalogue Books - Q&A with Nicola May

Back Catalogue Books is my new regular Saturday feature, focusing on books that are not the latest releases. There is going to be a mix of Q&As and also reviews, depending on what I have the space for.

If you are an author wanting to take part in Back Catalogue Books then please do email on gilbster at gmail dot com and I'll whizz the questions over to you.

I hope everyone enjoys this weekly look back at some of the slightly older books that are about but still great, and that I eventually make a dent in my TBRs as a result of it!

I’m Nicola May, author of eight romcom novels. All of which I like to put under the genre ‘chick lit with a kick.’

1) Please tell me about your first book, and what started you writing in the first place

My first book was Working it Out. About Ruby Matthews, who on getting made redundant from her marketing job decides to undertake 12 jobs in 12 months to find the one of her dreams.

I have no great lightbulb moment about starting to write. I was a late starter at 30 too, but basically I got dared to run a half marathon by work colleagues and wrote a diary alongside my training. I realised that I could write humour and had some form of talent and went from there.

2)  How many books have you written and what are they?

I’ve written 7 full length romcoms and 1 novella as follows:

Love Me Tinder
The SW19 Club
Christmas Evie (won award for Best Author Read at Festival of Romance 2014 – novella)
Let Love Win (sequel to Working it Out – nominated for Best Author Read at Festival of Romance 2013)
The School Gates (won award for Best Author Read at Festival of Romance 2012)
Better Together
Working it Out
Star Fish

3)  Which book are you most proud of writing?

The School Gates. I was recovering from a hysterectomy after losing twins and it was a very dark time. However, I managed to write a good book, that won an award and is still my bestseller.

4)  Which book was your favourite to write?

Working it Out as there are many very funny, but also touching scenes.

5) Who are your favourite characters from your books and why?

I’m still fond of Ruby from Working it Out and Let Love Win, she’s a very ballsy character with a great sense of humour.

6) If you could go back and change anything from any of your books, what would it be, and why?

I wouldn’t change a thing. I see writing as an ongoing craft and I have learnt something new from each one.

7) Which of your covers if your favourite and why?

I like the cover of  Love Me Tinder, my current novel. It’s modern, bright and creates intrigue before even opening the book.

8) Have you ever thought about changing genres, if so what else would you like to write?

I would write a gritty crime drama.

9) Looking forward can you let us know what you are working on next?

I have a few ideas bubbling around my head at the moment. I am currently concentrating on promoting Love Me Tinder, out in paperback on February 2 and then I will need to get cracking on the next one.

10) I dare not ask for a favourite author, but is there any author’s back catalogue you admire and why?

I adore Milly Johnson, Carole Matthews and Marian Keyes. Outside my genre, Patrick Gale. He writes about family dynamics. Nothing is ever sugar coated and he has created some magnificently flawed characters.

11) Finally, is there anything else you would like to say about your back catalogue of books?

Just that I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved to date and I hope that everybody enjoys reading them.

Thank you so much Nicola for sharing with us about your back catalgoue. It turns out that I have either read or I own all of your books, I just need to read more of them!

Guest Post & Giveaway - Lady P does Christmas by Nicola May - #CuteChristmas

‘Cali big tits, Cali big tits.’

‘Lady P! Not today please, there’s too much to do!’ Cali Summers threw a strand of silver tinsel towards her pet’s cage. ‘And, if you dare start saying that in front of my mother on Christmas Day.’

‘No, no, no, no, no, no,’ the African grey parrot shrieked and starting diving around her large cage.
Cali laughed. ‘What? Is silver not your colour?’

***
So, that’s my owner, Cali Summers;  30’ish, prettyish, kind, caring, straightforward and naive where men are concerned.

She pretends she’s cross with me most of the time, but I know she loves me really. Fresh food and water every day proves that, and when she’s sad she talks to me too. On and on and on she goes. About her husband leaving her for Bella Bitch, their personal trainer and then boring me about her job as an Events Manager in a hotel.

And, when it’s not that,  I tell you, she  makes my claws curl with some of the things she’s got up to with men in this flat. It’s since she’s been part of this Tinder dating internet lark, you see. She’s gone a bit crazy with it. And, it’s a good job I can use my discretion sometimes and keep me beak shut or her mother would definitely have a funny turn.

So, despite trying very hard to meet someone to spend Christmas with, it hasn’t happened yet? So, we are spending it this year with her mum, dad, brother, his vile wife Petra and their even viler dog, Snoop, who does nothing but terrorise me for the whole day. I am going to peck his nose off this year so help him, if he dares winds me up.

I don’t like it when she’s sad though. That’s when I have to throw out the ‘I love you Callerina card.’ That makes her smile and when Cali’s happy, I’m happy.

Ooh she’s unloading her bags now, any cuttle fish in there, love? I mean it is Christmas. Here come the mince pies, she loves mince pies. And, sherry. People laugh at her because she likes sherry. I shout ‘wanker’ if they do that. I don’t like them laughing at her.

‘Look what I’ve got for you.’ Cali rustled about in the bag.

‘Get ’em out! Get ’em out!’

‘Lady P, I’ve warned you.’

Ha, ha I knew that would wind her up. But look, banana chips and fruit cup jellies. Yes, perlease...

***
Raising a glass of sherry, Cali places a couple of the treats in the bottom of her errant bird’s cage.

‘Cheers, Lady P and Happy Christmas to you.’

The African grey cocks her head to the side nonchalantly. ‘Jingle Balls, jingle balls, jingle all the way.’

You too can read more about Cali and Lady’s P’s antics in Nicola’s eighth novel, Love Me Tinder; available to download now with the Paperback release on Valentine’s Day.

Guest Post - A Winning Post by Nicola May - Booklympics

I won’t deny I love watching a sportsman in action.

Many a rugby players’ firm thigh and a diver’s six pack have turned my head, but given the choice I’d rather a petite, honed and toned jockey in colourful racing silks any day.

Being born and bred in Ascot, a small town synonymous with the famous Royal Ascot Week, (an annual race meeting where the Queen attends every day), horse racing is in my blood.

I attend as many race meetings at Ascot as I can and l just adore the whole experience. From seeing the owners and trainers nervously watching their prized animals in the parade ring, to the bookmakers shouting out their best prices to the betting punters. And, then, to a drink with friends whilst picking the winners (hopefully). To my favourite part, the actual races, where I feel heart pumping exhilaration as the horses gallop towards the winning post.

So why is a romance author gabbing on about horse racing you may ask? Well... in my first novel, Working it Out, Ruby gets made redundant from her marketing job and decides to do 12 jobs in 12 months to try and find the one of her dreams. One of her jobs is working as a waitress in a box at Royal Ascot. It certainly doesn’t go without humorous incident, including Ruby having to serve her current eccentric lover and his wife, whom she didn’t even know existed!

Like Rachel, I shall be cheering along the GB team in Rio this summer, but forgive me if I pop out to enjoy the thrills and spills of some summer racing too.

Thank you so much Nicola for this fabulous post about horse racing. I haven't been to the races for years, but would love to live close enough to a big race track to be able to go often. Just remember though Nicola, not to bet all your royalties from your fab books on the horses!

Dull security or risky freedom - which would you choose?

With her marriage in pieces, shy Cali Summers is faced with this decision and hits the world of fast love on an internet dating app.

Using room 102 in the hotel where she works as her dating 'lair', she opens herself up to a world of sex, lies, deception, as well as personal discovery and passionate love.

With a charming F1 engineer, a handsome army officer and her adulterous ex all on the scene, a predictable love match is far from on the cards.

There is quite a lot I want to say about this book, but I'm going to need to be careful of potential spoilers. My overwhelming feeling after finishing Love Me Tinder is that it could be made into a fabulous romantic comedy film, as it has all the elements there already, and I can see it easily on a big screen.

This was one of those books that had me giggling to myself from very early on, and I just didn't really stop throughout. Love Me Tinder is very easy to read, with lots of short chapters, to the extent that you will find yourself saying just one more chapter, and 10 will pass before you surface again.

Cali Summers goes from being upset about her cheating soon to be ex-husband into a world of tinder and casual encounters, some more horrifying than others, and most of the situations will probably be familiar to regular users of the app.

Cali also has a best friend Annie, who she is trying to help out, and has some great colleagues in the hotel where she works, with one of them even letting her use room 102 for some of her encounters.  Cali is if anything a bit too naive to be taking part in online dating, and I couldn't help but wish I could have knocked a small amount of sense into her.

The majority of the chapters are from Cali's view point, however every now and then you will get a quick snipped focusing on another character, often allowing the reader to have a sneak peek of relevant information that Cali is yet to know about. So even though I knew some things were potentially coming, I still enjoyed seeing the various reactions once they were out in the open.

Although I have only read a few books by Nicola May so far, I am continually impressed by her writing and sense of humour. I thought Love Me Tinder was absolutely fantastic and I was sorry to see it finish.

Thank you so much to Nicola May for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

Book Review - Christmas Evie by Nicola May

Title: Christmas Evie
Author: Nicola May

It’s two days before Christmas and Evie Harris finds herself both manless and jobless. After a chance encounter with handsome Greg (and egged on by her toy-boy-eating friend, Bea) she agrees to work at a homeless shelter on Christmas Day.

Striking up an unlikely friendship with homeless Yves, Evie begins an unwitting journey of spiritual awakening, all set against the sparkling winter backdrop of London.

A New Year’s Eve revelation is on its way … but will it leave Evie with a happy heart, or will she allow the pre-Christmas past to dictate her future?

Nicola May has been on my radar for a while as an author I would like to read, and when I was given the opportunity to read Christmas Evie, I jumped on it.

Christmas Evie, is a short story, that is full of heart and a fabulous message, that you don't need to be materialistic to be happy.

Evie has had a tough run up to Christmas, losing both her job and her boyfriend, she knows things need to change and soon. While drowning her sorrows in Sherry, she meets Greg and is co-erced into spending Christmas Day helping out a homeless shelter.

The experience at the shelter and the chance meeting with Yves, is enough that over a short few days of the Christmas period, her life changes radically.

I loved the various meetings Evie has with Yves and you get to see a side of London, that is just as impressive, but is free to experience. Yves is clearly a spiritual man and the whole way through I had the feeling there was something more to him, than just a homeless man...

Christmas Evie is a short story, which packs a fair amount in, you get a sense of a supporting friendship with Bea, and she has a completely different Christmas period than her normal one. This is the perfect book to read in a lunch hour, or whenever you want a quick read, and well paced snapshot into another persons life.

This may be short, but for the story that is being told its the perfect size, and has just enough details to get a feel for Evie at least, and just enough description to get a good picture in your mind about the locations featured.

Christmas Evie is a wonderfully crafted short story, that has given me a valuable insight into Nicola May's writing style and abilities, and I'm very impressed and will certainly be reading more from her in the future.

Thank you to Nicola May, for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
