Guest Post - June Moonbridge talking about Egypt - Bookish World Cup - Egypt

Egypt… the land of the Pharaohs. The Pyramids. The beginning of civilisation we know now. I could go on…

Being as a child somewhat a history nerd I was reading everything I was able to get my hands on about the ancient times in Egypt, as long as it wasn’t school stuff, I almost knew their history by heart. And having my kind of imagination it’s no wonder I was able to transfer myself there in my mind so many times. I was dying to see it with my own eyes. I still do, but somewhat my OH has his own reservation of making our holidays there due to the… well, um… the world circumstances.

But then… a part of Egypt is also the

Sahara… one place I never thought I was going to fall in love with. Always considering myself to be the wind and the water person, I never expected something like this would be happening to me. But it did. More than twenty years ago for the first time.

It was the trip into the dry, hot, unwelcoming nature that captured my heart. Unexpectedly. I really don’t like too much heat. I’m literally dying when the temperature rises above 28°C and the trip into the heart of the heat itself, wasn’t something… oh wait. It was. It was something I was looking forward to.

Yes, it was true that I was looking for the shadow everywhere it was possible to find it. The water canyon in the oasis we stopped to look at, the big stones on the hills where another oasis was… but then, in the evening of that first day of our trip we stopped in the middle of it.

Sahara… Magic…

The sun was going down, but it was not yet the evening and the hot breeze that followed us during the day, became less hot. More bearable.

We were taken not far from the main road – read ONLY road in the dessert – to meet the Bedouins. There I touch the sand for the first time. It wasn’t rough as I expected. No. It was like a glass hour sand. If you ever broke one of them, you’ll know what I am talking about. And there, right there – it happened. I fell in love with it. It was… A magic moment.

The sun went down slowly on the horizon, we were given something similar to a hijab to cover our heads and mouths due to the higher winds and the sand that was risen from the ground. And we were welcomed to ride the camels.

It was an hour that passed just too soon…

Coming back home… I longed to go back again. I still do. I try to convince my OH every year to take our holidays there. Till now no luck… but I will return… one day.

However due to the longing something just clicked together in a story. A story that came together in my second novel Caught Between Two Worlds.

A contemporary romance set in the beautiful land of Egypt…

A vacation on the shores of the Egyptian Red Sea was Veronica Blake’s long-lasting dream.

But dreams turn into nightmares. Controlling boyfriend Peter complains and embarrasses her frequently in front of everybody from the start. A trip to the ancient sites turns into a disaster. But the salvation comes in the form of the mysterious Nicholas, a blue-eyed man she remembers from the hotel.

Deep in the Sahara Desert Veronica encounters a totally different way of life. She desperately seeks the truth about everything that happened. Alone and afraid of her new written future she finds consolation with Nicholas, the only man she’s left to trust.

Will she ever accept the truth she seeks, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

Will she be able to find a way back to the life she was forced to leave behind?

  1. Thank you Rachel, for having me. I'm sorry I'm late today, but my 'real' life gets in a way just too much lately...

  2. I agree, June, there is something special about the Sahara. Leave OH behind and join a group trip - there are loads of companies like Explore and Exodus that go a little off the beaten track!
