When a mini-break becomes make or break...

Kathy Courage has never visited the famous Italian city of Florence before, so she's thrilled when she and her boyfriend Neil are invited there for a wedding. Unfortunately, with Neil's constant complaining and his teenage children in tow, it's not exactly the romantic break Kathy was hoping for.

But when a mix-up with her flights leaves Kathy stranded in the city, she decides to embrace the unexpected and stay on alone.

What follows is a life-changing few days in the Tuscan sun, as Kathy begins to question the choices that have led her here. With the help of the colourful Innocenti family, who offer Kathy a place to stay, she gradually begins to realise that there's a much bigger world out there, if only she can be brave enough to explore it.

Could Italy hold the answers to her future happiness? Or is Kathy destined to return to her old life?

I simply adored every moment of this book, Kelly Courage is one fabulous main character, but more on her in a moment,

I firstly want to say how much I utterly despised and hated Neil, her boyfriend and his family. What a self-centred, confidence stripping, uncaring group of people.  I had great glee in my hatred of him, and I'm really not sure he had any redeeming qualities at all.   The question of course for most of the book was whether Kathy would every notice his true colours, that really were rather obvious!

Kathy though is fabulous, especially once thrown slightly outside of her comfort zone and having to spending extra time in Florence alone.  You could feel her excitement, and then her fear,  and relief, basically every emotion under the sun so closely, as she adjusted to what needed to be done.

I loved the whole of the Innocenti family, from the mischievous Manu, smelly Faustino,  gorgeous Henry, kind hearted Carla and the others as they really helped Kathy out.  Although she also proved very helpful too, toward the family.

We don't see much of the typical touristy bits of Florence, as although the setting is key, this was far more about Kathy's dreams of the city,  and integrating with a local family, so we see things from a different perspective which was refreshing.

Chrissie Manby's observations  were spot on as always, especially during the first bit of the book with how Neil's family behaved in the run up to a wedding,  and how one teen at at least was completely oblivious to everything as he was attached to his phone.

There are plenty of laughs and drama in this marvellous book that I adored every single second of and read with a big grin on my face.   Another triumph for one of my all time favourite, and must read authors.

Do you really only have one shot at love?

Twenty two years ago Dani Parker had grand plans for her life.

Now, she's a single mother in quaint Newbay working at the hotel where she got her first ever job. When she bumps into ex-boyfriend Nat, she wonders if this might be the start of something not-quite-new. Until his fiancée walks through the door . . .

Dani's daughter Flossie is sixteen - so of course she knows best, about everything. And her new boyfriend Jed is all she could ever want in a man . . . right?

Flossie's widowed grandma Jane firmly believes that lightning never strikes twice. So when she finds herself frequenting Bill's pet shop, she refuses to believe that the L-word has anything to do with it.

In a confusion of cakes, elopements and naughty puppies, will the three women discover that 'once in a lifetime' isn't quite as rare as they thought?

This is Chrissie Manby at her best, writing about a multi generational family in a realistic and funny way!

There is long lost love, teenage love, love of a pet dog (with a ridiculous name), family love - you could say the book is about love!

Dani hasn't seen Nat since she was 16, and now he is back in Newbay with a girlfriend and Dani has a teenage daughter herself now, yet there are plenty of reminiscing as the two try to continue moving on with their chosen paths in life.

Life for all of Dani's family changes when Jezza enters it, from then on he is the centre of attention from all angles and is one of my favourite characters. He is instrumental in most of the elements of the book whether  you would expect it or not.

I loved meeting Dani's family and thoroughly enjoyed being back in Newbay, which is now becoming a familiar setting for fans of Chrissie Manby, even if the books are all standalone.

This is a feel good summer read that is a lot of fun, and definitely had me smiling.  I also found the pages were turning faster than I wanted, and ran out of book to read far too soon!  Easily one of my favourite books from the author since the series about the Benson family!

In the quaint seaside town of Newbay, a beginner's cookery course is starting. And three very different students have signed up...

Liz's husband has left her for a twenty-something clean-eating blogger, and she's determined to show the world - and her daughter - she's just as capable in the kitchen. John, newly widowed after fifty years of marriage, can't live on sympathy lasagnes forever. To thirty-year-old workaholic Bella, the course is a welcome escape from her high-pressure job. Their only common ground: between them, they can barely boil an egg!

Enter talented chef Alex, who is determined to introduce his pupils to the comforts of cuisine. As Liz, John and Bella encounter various disasters in the kitchen, the unlikely trio soon form a fast friendship. Their culinary skills might be catastrophic - but could the cookery club have given them a recipe for happiness?

Chrissie Manby has cooked up a winning recipe of a story that has had me thoroughly enjoying this cold rainy August evening. I even became oblivious to the sound of the rain on our plastic conservatory roof, while I was reading about Liz and her broken marriage!

A year ago Liz’s husband moved out to be with Brittney a considerably younger health and fashion blogger, and Liz is still coming to terms with it, along with 15 year old daughter Saskia. They also have an adorable dog Ted.

Between Saskia and Ted there are loads of amusing incidents, and from various “conversations” between mother and daughter, Liz decides she needs to learn how to cook, she also needs to put Ted on a diet.

In the meantime Alex has set up a beginners cookery lesson course In Newbay, although there are only a handful of people interested in taking part. As the lessons progress Liz, Bella, John and Alex form unlikely friendships, and we learn all about various things hidden in their pasts.

The food described in the lessons are mouth-watering and the only thing missing from this book are the full recipes so you can learn to make the dishes yourself. There are some absolutely hilarious scenes in this book, mainly involving Liz and her family.

From Bella’s story we get some human kindness in her role as public defence lawyer, and one particular client of hers I had a soft spot for.  Even John’s story that seemed straight forward isn’t quite as it seems, although listening to him reminisce about his late wife is heart-warming.

As a fan of Chrissie Manby I am delighted to see a return to Newbay, the town featured in A Fairy Tale for Christmas. The NEWTs are mentioned again as is another character who I remember from the previous book. Although the setting may be familiar, this is a whole new story, new cast of main characters and stands completely alone from her previous work.

From the moment I started this book I knew I was reading another fabulous story, from one of my favourite authors, and it wasn’t long before I was telling mum that I need to buy her a copy of the book too, as it is just up her street!  I devoured this book from cover to cover and after finishing my main thought was - “it’s a shame I have to wait so long for another book by the author, I need more”!

Thank you to Hodder and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Book Review - A Fairy Tale for Christmas by Chrissie Manby

A wonderful, heartwarming and funny Christmas novel from Chrissie Manby, perfect for curling up with in front of the fire.

What could be more magical at Christmas than a fairy tale come true?

It's the festive season and the members of the Newbay Theatre Society, more commonly known as the NEWTS, are preparing to put on a show. Being cast as Cinderella is the realization of a dream for newcomer Kirsty, not least because she hopes starring in a panto under the direction of her boyfriend Jon will bring them closer together.

But Kirsty soon learns that it's not all glitter and good cheer behind the scenes at the amateur theatre as bitter rivalries nurtured through decades, wardrobe mishaps and suspicious near-fatal accidents threaten to derail the production. And then there's Prince Charming himself. Will working together with Jon bring Kirsty her happy ever after... or reveal their love to be nothing but a 'showmance'?

With Christmas just around the corner, it's going to take more than a Fairy Godmother to get Kirsty and her cast-mates to the ball.

I am a sucker for a pantomime, and have a real soft spot for Cinderella. I half wish I could borrow some children to watch the new massive production at the Palladium, but that would be weird, and clearly I need to get back to the a point!

The NEWTS are putting on Cinderella this year, and guess who is playing the lead? It's only Kirsty who Chrissie Manby fans may remember from A Proper Family Adventure, as she was also onboard the ship the Benson family were on. She has followed boyfriend Jon, to Newbay, in order to star in the am-dram panto that Jon has written and directed.

What can I say about Jon? Well he really is the baddie of the piece. He seems overly critical of Kirsty continually, and seemed to have running digs about the size of her feet and her weight, running continually. To the extent that I swear that if I heard him say its "fast day" to Kirsty one more time, I wanted to travel to Newbay to whack him over and over with a hard crusty baguette, the sort that he wouldn't let Kirsty eat.

Then there is the most heartwarming storyline of the book which involves Ben and Thea. Seeing how Thea comes out of herself after she meets Kirsty and decides to audition to be in the chorus is a joy to behold, and does wonders for showing how drama can improve a child's confidence. At the start of the book she feels a bit lanky and not sure of her own body, with not fabulous co-ordination, she doesn't really have any friends, and then she becomes a mouse and everything changes.

The whole book focuses around the auditions and subsequent production of Cinderella, and we get to know the whole cast incredibly well. I loved the mix of personalities in the show's company, and seeing how some of them are just like the roles they have been cast in. I loved the glimpses we got of the twins playing the ugly stepsisters, and it sounds as though they had the just the right level of knee-slapping humour and risque ad-libs.

I found the whole book flowed really well, and I can't believe that this is Chrissie Manby's 20th book already, as it means I am a lot older than I thought, having read all of her books. This is another shining example of a book that is a joy to read from Chrissie, its not overtly festive but has all the trimmings of the season, while focusing on the panto's run, rather than Christmas Day itself.

With some interesting sub plots, a very enjoyable set of main storylines, two focal points both of which provide plenty of entertainment, this is a story that will conjure up memories of your own trips to the local panto, making you want to scream out all those classic lines including "oh no he isn't" and "it's behind you" while seeing just what the whole cast really get up to behind the scenes.

Sparklers, bonfires, trick-or-treating... autumn has arrived!

The thirty-first of October usually marks the start of the party season in the Benson Edwards household but, having recently lost his beloved cat Fishy, little Jack, aged eight, isn't ready to celebrate. When the rest of the Bensons and their neighbours decide to throw a Halloween fancy-dress bash in an attempt to cheer Jack up, however, not everything goes to plan as Mark and Ronnie play a ghostly prank which inadvertently sparks a local scandal. By the time Bonfire Night rolls around, will their neighbourhood relations be up in in smoke? And will Jack have rediscovered his sparkle?

Falling Leaves and Fireworks had me on the verge of tears right near the start of the story, and had me smiling towards the end. And during the story I was frankly slightly scared as I'm not the biggest fan of Halloween, and there was a lot of talk of ghosts and spirits.  However I am sceptical as well, so was able to take it all with a pinch of salt.

I was delighted to be reunited with the Benson Edwards family, and as a massive fan of the series to date, I loved that Jack was the clear focus of this short story. I think this could easily be read as a standalone story, but for you to love it to its full, reading at least one of the other books in the series may help just to get a feel for all the family dynamics.

This whole short takes place from just before Halloween until Fireworks night, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I loved the focus on the Benson's pet cat Fishy as almost everything that occurs is directly the result of something to do with Fishy.

Falling Leaves and Fireworks is a very welcome snapshot at how the Bensons are getting on this autumn, and even for a brief time it was a pleasure to be reunited with them.

Book Review - A Wedding at Christmas by Chrissie Manby

What comes to mind when you picture a wedding at Christmas? A gorgeous white dress accessorised with a thick velvet cape... bridesmaids in red velvet too? An arch of Christmas greenery: holly and ivy and boughs of fir. Candles and fairy lights. Snow!

Chelsea Benson has just twelve weeks to organise her perfect winter wedding. Her family and friends pitch in to help, but sisterly squabbling, issues with money and an Ice-Queen mother-in-law soon threaten Chelsea's plans for her big day. And that's without the firework fiasco...

Rescuing Chelsea's dream of a proper family wedding might just take all the magic of Christmas...

A Weddding at Christmas is a proper farewell to the Benson family. This is as far as I know the last planned book about this wonderful family, and as such it is left without many loose ends, and in some respects comes full circle.

This book will definitely work as a standalone, as all the key moments of the previous books have been mentioned in passing, and the family tree at the front of the book is useful too, not only to newcomers, but also to returners to the family, as its a quick and easy way to remind yourself, who is connected to who. Of course if you haven't read any of these, I would recommend you start the series at the beginning, as they are all a brilliant as each other, and better combined.

Once again this book is written in lots of very short chapters, so even if you are busy, you could fit in a quick chapter or two in between going about your daily life, and still move the story along. Each chapter has a heading telling us who the focus is on in it, which is very helpful when you have four generations, and many different characters stories needing to be heard. But it is not confusing at all and you will soon settle into a nice easy rhythm of reading this book and ignoring the outside world.

I will admit there are elements in this book, that I could see coming quite a bit before they occurred, but it didn't really bother me, as the storytelling is so great, I wanted to see the characters reactions to certain events.

There are many laugh out loud moments in A Wedding at Christmas, and as you would expect from the Benson family, nothing ever runs smoothly, especially not a wedding being put together in only 12 weeks, with Chelsea, Ronnie and Annabel all having such different opinions on what a wedding should be. Family tensions are high, add in Chelsea meeting her fiancee's dead wife's parents for the first time, and all manner of other dramas.

I'm surprised that this book wasn't called A Proper Family Wedding, as that is exactly what it was, but a wedding at Christmas, with a festive feel to it.

I have loved every second of this book, and in fact of this whole series, and really can't wait to see what treats Chrissie Manby has for us next. A Wedding at Christmas is a fantastic story about family, friendship, pulling together in times of need, and most importantly of love.

Could you spend two weeks at sea with your family?

Thanks to an unexpected windfall, the Bensons are treating themselves to a luxury cruise. With stop-offs in Barcelona, Rome and Marseilles, plus constant entertainment onboard, it's a dream come true . . . Or is it? Last time Chelsea Benson went on holiday with this lot she nearly went crazy.

Her mum and sister are convinced Chelsea's boyfriend Adam will propose on the ship. Chelsea's sure he won't, but she can't help feeling butterflies as they set sail. Is Adam going to pop the question, or will the only thing to pop be Chelsea's ego?

Onboard dramas, family upheavals, memories and sunshine . . . Fall in love with the Benson family, and treat yourself to a five-star family cruise, all without leaving your sofa.

A proper summer holiday read by a properly amazing author! In answer to the first question of the blurb, I spent 1 week at sea with my mum last year, and have made a vow that I won't be doing that again. I will be going on another cruise though, very soon, and reading this book has put me properly in the holiday mood. I can't wait to jump on board my own Mediterranean cruise.

Grandpa Bill is very fond of saying "I've won the lottery" when in reality he rarely plays it. For his 87th birthday, his great grand children including Jack buy him a ticket. Imagine the whole Benson's family shock when he really does get a good win on the lottery.

They decide to spend a good portion of it on a holiday for the whole family, and not the cheap All Inclusive in Lanzarote that was where we were introduced to the Bensons in A Proper Family Holiday. This time, they decide to go on a Mediterranean cruise sailing from Southampton for two weeks.

The whole of the Bensons and Buchanans are invited, however due to various circumstances its only the majority of the Bensons that go on the trip. What follows is the antics of this loveable family as they spend a fortnight on board of floating resort, full of fun and frolics.

Some of the descriptions of the ports of call made me really want to go to those places and do those excursions especially Ajaccio, Corsica, and the turtles and tortoises. I love an excursion that involves animals, but after the Bensons spend some time with the monkeys in Gibraltar, I may give that a pass if I am ever fortunate enough to visit.

This book can be read as a standalone, and I believe if you haven't read the previous two books, you would still enjoy this, however I would urge you to read all of the books about this family, as they are all terrific books.

If you have read the previous books, but it was a while ago, there are enough references to key incidents in the first two, to remind you of all the details.  As a third book in a series, I have flown through reading it, I loved every second of it and can't wait for November for the next book to come out. The more books I read about the Bensons, the more I love them.

If you are looking for a fun and entertaining  book this summer, then read A Proper Family Adventure!
