Romantic Fiction Book Club Facebook Group - Massive #Giveaway

Being a massive fan of romantic fiction, as I think you may be able to tell if you have visited this blog before, I'm incredibly excited to be able to share the details of new giveaway and Facebook group  - all as part of the RNA's 60th Birthday celebrations, and their February romance reading month.

Calling all fans of Romantic Fiction! This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and, to celebrate this momentous occasion, the RNA are launching a new Facebook group, the Romantic Fiction Book Club, which aims to be a warm and cosy place for lovers of romantic fiction to engage with other readers, bloggers and authors of romantic fiction. The group is open to anyone who loves to read any type of romance, bloggers, and all authors of novels with a romantic element, not just those who are members of the RNA.

To launch the new group with a bang, we have an amazing competition for you. In conjunction with publisher One More Chapter, members of the new Romantic Fiction Book Club Facebook group have the chance to win an amazing bundle of 60 romantic novels, donated by One More Chapter. There are also 60 runner up prizes of a single, signed romance novel, so there are a total of 61 prizes up for grabs. What amazing odds of winning something! The competition is running from 14th February (of course!) to 29th February. Take a look at some of the fabulous titles up for grabs.

All you have to do to enter the competition is join the new Romantic Fiction Book Club here and then follow the link below to the competition:

There is detailed information about how to enter on the new Facebook page, including how to increase your chances of winning by subscribing to the RNA and One More Chapter’s social media links, plus, there is lots of fun interaction going on in the group. UK entries only I’m afraid. What are you waiting for, go and sign up now!
It's a fabulous group that I love being a part of already, so hope you will come alone and join in the fun too.
And can I just say - wow what a prize!! So many of those wonderful books have already been featured on here,

How on earth has it been 4 years already? - #Giveaway

4 years ago today, Rachel's Random Reads was born.

This was meant to be a blog, an experiment for a month or two, or until someone gave me crippling bad feedback at which point I was intending to run away from blogging.

However it soon become apparent that the blogging community is on the whole, one of the friendliest I've ever been apart of, I feel like I'm part of a big book loving family and no longer the weirdo in the corner preferring to read over real life.

Although funnily enough since I started the blog, I've potentially had the most active social life of my adulthood - admittedly living in London does help, but 'I'm amazed at the amount of book launches, blogger / author meet ups and panel discussions I've been able to attend.

Only at the weekend I was up in Birmingham at a Team Sue Moorcroft lunch, which featured not only the wonderful Sue Moorcroft, but fellow blogger Anne Williams, Kim Nash, who many of you may know as the supplier of fabulous books for Bookouture, but in fact has her wonderful debut novel Amazing Grace out on Wednesday,  authors Maggie Sullivan, Mark West and Mick Arnold too.   Many of those I count amongst my close friends, so was a wonderful afternoon.

I've been incredibly lucky over the past four years, to be able to review some absolutely amazing books, and despite my fledgling blog tour organising business, Rachel's Random Resources going from strength to strength, and my having a lot less time to read or review, I have every intention of continuing with the blog.

I am far too addicted to Netgalley and to having my own small space on the internet to ever want to give this up.. so sorry but you are all stuck with me!

I would though like to give thanks to whoever it was that nominated me towards the end of last year for the RNA Media Star award,  I truly am honoured to have been nominated, and can only offer congratulations to The Writing Garnet,  whose reviews I really trust.   I've also been nominated in this years Blogger Bash awards - which is open to a public vote, and I hope to have a bit of info about that incredibly soon.

Lastly I would like to thank all the publicists, publishers, blog tour organisers, for all of the books that I have been trusted with to give an opinion on, and had many hours of pleasure reading, to all the book bloggers for your support,  and lastly and most importantly to anyone who has ever read any of my blog posts, or interacted with me,  I appreciate it far more than I can ever say.

Hopefully with all the best will in the world I will be back here same time next celebrating a 5th year!!

In the meantime...I feel a giveaway coming on, as I seem to include one every year on these posts.... so let's see what is lurking on my giveaway bookshelf for you all today...

10,000 is just a mindblowing amount of supporters and I don't have the words to express how happy I am, and how grateful, as without you, my blog would be rubbish.

Book Review - The Friend by Dorothy Koomson - #Giveaway

Amazon UK
Title: The Friend
Author: Dorothy Koomson
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Arrow
Publication Date: 8th March 2018
Rating: 5 Stars

What secrets would you kill to keep?

After her husband’s big promotion, Cece Solarin arrives in Brighton with their three children, ready to start afresh. But their new neighbourhood has a deadly secret.

Three weeks earlier, Yvonne, a very popular parent, was almost murdered in the grounds of the local school – the same school where Cece has unwittingly enrolled her children.

Already anxious about making friends when the parents seem so cliquey, Cece is now also worried about her children’s safety. By chance she meets Maxie, Anaya and Hazel, three very different school mothers who make her feel welcome and reassure her about her new life.

That is until Cece discovers the police believe one of her new friends tried to kill Yvonne. Reluctant to spy on her friends but determined to discover the truth, Cece must uncover the potential murderer before they strike again . . .

I did not see that ending coming at all, it has taken me completely by surprise as at no point did I think things would take that turn.

Before you get to the ending though you have a book that is continually slowly building the tension, and wow does it suddenly get to you this book.

For a fair bit of it I was overwhelmed, 4 main view points, time limes jumping about the place, but not only 4 characters but all their separate families too, its a lot of characters, personalities to try to learn all about.

Once I was into the rhythm of the bool though, I found it incredibly interesting and couldn't bring myself to put it down at all.

There are many secrets in this story, some of them are hinted at and I guessed early on the basics of them, but the details still surprised me once revealed, and some of them seemed to come from nowhere, but were really surprising, and well thought out.

The Friend as you may expect from the title is all about a friendship group, who are being ripped apart from the events of one terrible night, but just who knows what.  Then there is the newcomer to the area with a rather special skill set, but really just wants to make some friends.

This is an incredibly well written and thought provoking story, from one of my favorite authors, and I'm so happy that I had a chance to read this story of friendship, secrets, lies, and more!

Thank you to Netgalley and Cornerstone Digital for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

It's that time of year again..I'm going on holiday and a #giveaway

Tomorrow, fingers crossed I will be getting on a plane to spend a very relaxed fortnight on the island of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands. Those of you who have been following for a while may be rightly thinking that I spend Christmas there the other year, and you are right - turns out its a destination I can actually afford over Christmas, although I will be in a different hotel in the same resort this time.

I am looking forward to doing nothing for two weeks, so those of you following on social media wanting the same level of photos that I do while I'm on a cruise, I'm sorry in advance for disappointing.

My intention is to read and sleep in the sun during the day,  head into town in the evenings, read while eating dinner and then find some entertainment to watch, to prove I can do more than just read!

My current intention is to not provide a bunch of my normal mini reviews once I'm back this time, purely as I have bought a bluetooth keyboard and need to make a dent in my review stack.

For the first time since I started the blog, I don't have a couple of weeks of posts nicely scheduled already for when I'm back, as time of writing this I have one review and one for a tour a few weeks later.

Unfortunately I am finding I just don't have as much time to read, so expect less content from me in the new year once I'm back, as I try to find a new rhythm that works for me.  This is all due to the launch of my new business, that I am thoroughly enjoying - Rachel's Random Resources, and I am putting everything into it to make sure it will be a success.

So what am I intending to read while away? Well I am reasonably sure  will take this selection of paperbacks

A rather varied selection I feel.  Now I may be cutting down on blogging next year but one thing that will be remaining is my vote post, and for those suffering from withdrawal while I'm away, well you may like this!

Below you will see my entire review TBR of 2016 and 2017 releases (keeping the 2018 titles hidden!).  What I want to know is which of these books you think I should read while I'm on holiday, which you would most like to see reviews of.

If you leave me a comment - I will be picking those up on emails away, and if I can't make a decision on a next book to read  then I will take a look at the list, although when the reviews will appear  can't say! I believe there are 43 titles on that - although knowing me who knows what I may read!

And there's more...if you comment as part of the giveaway you will be entered to win one of the 4 Christmas books that I feel like giving away!

Here's the giveaway and if you have read down this far then I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Book filled New Year.

Giveaway - 4 Winners will each win one of these books (Open to Europe only)

1st  Name drawn out - A Winter's Tale by Carrie Elks
2nd Name - The Christmas Promise by Sue Moorcroft
3rd Name - Orphan in the Snow by Molly Green
4th Name - Coming Home to the Comfort Food Cafe by Debbie Johnson

Giveaway open to Europe, all options are voluntary, but please do what they ask, as I will be verifying the winner. Giveaway closes 23:59 02/01/2018. Winner will be announced on twitter, and they will need to reply within 7 days, or forfeit the prize, and I will re-draw for a new winner.  Good luck everyone.

Introducing Rachel's Random Resources....plus some celebratory #giveaways

We've made it, its September, and if you recall at the start of the summer I apologised that my blog would be a bit less busy than normal potentially, and that I was also working on setting up a new business.

Well the house move went ok, and after a week without internet, I was finally back online, and after two weeks I was fully back in the 21st Century when my new Sky Dish was installed!  Since being back online, I have been incredibly busy and the result is Rachel's Random Resources is now real and as of today live!

Some of you may know that in February 2016 I was working on an internship with Clink Street Publishing, which turned into a freelance job as a blog tour organiser for them. Fast forward to September 2017, and I am finally ready to strike out on my own and organise blog tours, cover reveals, blog blitzes and more, in addition to creating graphics for authors too.

As this is my new business, and I'm hoping my new full time job, I will be charging authors a fair fee for the privilege, but all the while hoping to create a small business that is a friend to both authors and book bloggers.

If you have a blog and love books and would like to follow me on my new journey, and see what fabulous authors I manage to attract the attention of then please do sign up to be a blog tour host.

To any authors reading this, please take a look at my new venture, and if you like the look of what you see, then get in contact with me, and we can look at working together.

And finally to the readers of Rachel's Random Reads, don't worry my blog is going nowhere. I still intend to post incredibly regularly book reviews, guest posts and more. I continually have ideas of new features that I may introduce in the future, and even with a new business to take up my time, I'm a book addict, I will still be reading. And if I'm reading then I'll be reviewing too!

Of course as you may already know I need very little reason to give things away, and today is no exception... I have 3 great giveaways for you to celebrate the birth of Rachel's Random Resources (please enter as many as you wish), so good luck...

....or wish me good luck on what could be my maddest plan to date, or fingers crossed most successful!

Book Review & Giveaway - The Worst Case Scenario Cookery Club by Chrissie Manby

Amazon UK
Title:  The Worst Case Scenario Cookery Club
Author: Chrissie Manby
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Publication Date: 24th August 2017
Rating: 5 Stars

In the quaint seaside town of Newbay, a beginner's cookery course is starting. And three very different students have signed up...

Liz's husband has left her for a twenty-something clean-eating blogger, and she's determined to show the world - and her daughter - she's just as capable in the kitchen. John, newly widowed after fifty years of marriage, can't live on sympathy lasagnes forever. To thirty-year-old workaholic Bella, the course is a welcome escape from her high-pressure job. Their only common ground: between them, they can barely boil an egg!

Enter talented chef Alex, who is determined to introduce his pupils to the comforts of cuisine. As Liz, John and Bella encounter various disasters in the kitchen, the unlikely trio soon form a fast friendship. Their culinary skills might be catastrophic - but could the cookery club have given them a recipe for happiness?

Chrissie Manby has cooked up a winning recipe of a story that has had me thoroughly enjoying this cold rainy August evening. I even became oblivious to the sound of the rain on our plastic conservatory roof, while I was reading about Liz and her broken marriage!

A year ago Liz’s husband moved out to be with Brittney a considerably younger health and fashion blogger, and Liz is still coming to terms with it, along with 15 year old daughter Saskia. They also have an adorable dog Ted.

Between Saskia and Ted there are loads of amusing incidents, and from various “conversations” between mother and daughter, Liz decides she needs to learn how to cook, she also needs to put Ted on a diet.

In the meantime Alex has set up a beginners cookery lesson course In Newbay, although there are only a handful of people interested in taking part. As the lessons progress Liz, Bella, John and Alex form unlikely friendships, and we learn all about various things hidden in their pasts.

The food described in the lessons are mouth-watering and the only thing missing from this book are the full recipes so you can learn to make the dishes yourself. There are some absolutely hilarious scenes in this book, mainly involving Liz and her family.

From Bella’s story we get some human kindness in her role as public defence lawyer, and one particular client of hers I had a soft spot for.  Even John’s story that seemed straight forward isn’t quite as it seems, although listening to him reminisce about his late wife is heart-warming.

As a fan of Chrissie Manby I am delighted to see a return to Newbay, the town featured in A Fairy Tale for Christmas. The NEWTs are mentioned again as is another character who I remember from the previous book. Although the setting may be familiar, this is a whole new story, new cast of main characters and stands completely alone from her previous work.

From the moment I started this book I knew I was reading another fabulous story, from one of my favourite authors, and it wasn’t long before I was telling mum that I need to buy her a copy of the book too, as it is just up her street!  I devoured this book from cover to cover and after finishing my main thought was - “it’s a shame I have to wait so long for another book by the author, I need more”!

Thank you to Hodder and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Giveaway to Win a paperback copy of The Worst Case Scenario Cookery Club (Europe Only)

Winner will be announced on twitter, and they will need to reply within 7 days, or forfeit the prize, and I will re-draw for a new winner.  Good luck everyone.

Book Review & Giveaway - It Takes Two by Emily Harvale

Amazon UK
Title: It Takes Two
Author: Emily Harvale
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Author supplied review copy
Publisher: Crescent Gate Publishing
Publication Date: 19th July 2017
Rating: 5 Stars

Alison Warner knows love doesn’t always last. Wedded bliss is hit and miss and she’s not taking any chances. She’s the daughter of divorce lawyers, so Ali knows the statistics by heart. Now her parents are adding to the numbers and Ali’s more certain than ever: marriage is not for her.

Others do not share her views. Her cousin Sasha’s got engaged; her best friend Jules is giving ‘Bridezilla’ new meaning and even her crazy gran, Gertie’s dogs are getting hitched. When her life-long friend, Simon Hart unexpectedly proposes, Ali’s convinced the world’s gone mad.

Having an arrogant new boss is the last thing Ali needs right now. Aidan Rourke has come to run The Shimmering River and Water Sports Centre – a job that should have been Ali’s. But at least she can be sure of one thing. Marriage is definitely not on Aidan’s mind. Although it’s abundantly clear something else is...

A sheer pleasure to read, I was hooked on this easy to read, fast flowing story, that despite the blurb had far less weddings than I was expecting.  In fact although Ali and Simons friends all seem to be getting engaged around them, there was only one wedding in the entire book, which I found quite refreshing.

Which meant that the book had a slightly different focus, and that is on Ali, her parent's argumentative relationship, Ali's friendship with Simon, her new boss at the Shimmering River and Water Sports Centre, Aiden, and also her friendships.

As the book is written in the third person, even though most of the chapters focus on Ali, there are occasional glimpses into Simon and Aiden's lives too. Aiden is a smooth talking, rich lothario and is someone my opinion changed about regularly.  Simon on the other hand is Ali's long time best friend, but things became awkward after a proposal, which may or may not have been in jest.

There is a kayaking scene in which I found the dialogue to be quite witty and clever, while seeing what the town looked like from the river was quite novel too.

I have no idea how but I read this cover to cover in under three hours, in one sitting. I just couldn't tear myself away and as the chapters were generally quite short, even if you are the sort that continually says "just one more chapter" you may end up even further than you expected before you know it.

I am a huge fan of Emily Harvale's books and have been for many years, and this one is incredibly enjoyable, well written and even features one of the most unlikely weddings I've ever seen. Add to it warring divorce lawyers, a grandma who seems a bit off the wall, a bride-zilla of a best friend, a massive engagement party to open the book, and a character who doesn't believe in marriage and you have all the ingredients for It Takes Two, a fabulous romantic comedy.

Thank you to Emily Harvale for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Giveaway to win 1 x signed copy of It Takes Two (Open Internationally)

Emily Harvale is as always being incredibly generous to readers of Rachel's Random Reads, and has given me one signed copy of It Takes Two to give away to a lucky winner.

Book Review & Giveaway - Trust Me by Angela Clarke

Amazon UK
Title: Trust Me
Author: Angela Clarke
Format reviewed: Ebook
Source: Netgalley
Publisher: Avon
Publication Date: 15th June 2017
Rating: 5 Stars

YOU SAW IT HAPPEN. DIDN’T YOU?

What do you do if you witness a crime…but no-one believes you?

When Kate sees a horrific attack streamed live on her laptop, she calls the police in a state of shock. But when they arrive, the video has disappeared – and she can’t prove anything. Desperate to be believed, Kate tries to find out who the girl in the video could be – and who attacked her.

Freddie and Nas are working on a missing persons case, but the trail has gone cold. When Kate contacts them, they are the only ones to listen and they start to wonder – are the two cases connected?

Dark, gripping, and flawlessly paced, Trust Me is the brilliant third novel in the hugely popular social media murderer series.

What would you do if you were surfing live videos on the internet and saw someone being sexually assaulted? Would you ring the police? Would you convince yourself it must be fake? Would you expect anyone to believe you?

Well Kate witnessed such a thing and she is struggling to get anyone to believe it, especially as there are no other reports, and the live stream and account were disabled very quickly afterwards. However there is just enough in the story for Freddie and Nas to take a look into it.

What follows is an investigation that becomes more interesting with every page that is turned, culminating with an epic finale.  There was no way that I could have predicted the eventual outcome, although I did have a couple of theories as the book progressed.

The pacing of Trust Me seemed right, it was fairly quick and Freddie and Nas seemed to have plenty of things to do continually. In addition to chapters from Freddie and Nas, we also get odd looks at people who may be involved in the crimes, and how they are feeling which was really interesting, but still written in a way that didn't give the game away completely to readers.

Trust Me is the third book of the Social Media Murders series and can easily be read as a standalone novel. Although as a fan of the series, I was glad to see more development especially of Freddie and also it was good to see police officers that featured in both of the previous books.

After reading Trust Me, and in fact all of the Social Media Murders books so far I have been left looking at social media in a new way, and can see just how fast it can be used for evil as well as good. In some respects I am a bit more wary as a result, especially in Trust Me's case of clicking on live videos.

Trust Me is yet another fabulous book in this series that kept me gripped really early on, and kept me thinking about it even in between reading stints of it.

Thank you so much to Avon and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Guest Post & Giveaway - Naked Chance by Jackie Buxton - Chances Fortnight

When I was given the task of writing a blog post about taking a chance, my head went automatically to the chances I'd taken with writing. I'd abandoned a first draft to write something else, foregoing 100,000 words and years of my life spent in the study, on the whim of a single idea which had wedged itself tight in the, 'You are Powerless to Ignore This', part of my brain. The result was my first published novel, Glass Houses. Tea & Chemo was a lucky break, too. I'd carefully prepared my submission to the potential publisher of Glass Houses, Urbane Publications, taking a good week dotting my 'I's and crossing my 'T's, only to then decide moments before pressing 'send' that I would also respond to the tiny note at the bottom of the submissions guidelines mentioning non-fiction. 'Particularly interested in self-help and memoire,' it said. 'Ideas only at this stage please.' I couldn’t ignore the idea I'd had for a book expanding on my blog posts about dealing with cancer, an idea which had been scratching away, only to be quashed by those voices which tell you that nobody, anywhere, is going to be interested in paying for a hard copy of your words. But Urbane Publications were interested and Tea & Chemo was the result this time. But far from me taking a chance, I decided my two titles were much more about the publisher taking a chance on me, rather than the other way around.

So then I thought about the biggest chance I'd taken in life and had to smile at the memory of Ilse, the totally bonkers, strong (for strong read, slightly terrifying), fluent in five languages except the one I needed, single mother to Andreas, who hailed from a German speaking colony of Rumania: Siebenbürgen. Ilse is the reason I learnt to speak German with a Romanian accent.

I was panicking about studying German and French at university following a woeful couple of years of A-level German teaching, which made no reference to the course syllabus, in which we read none of the set texts for the literature element and in which my fellow students and I concluded that just because you were a native of the country, it didn’t mean that you could teach the language, or indeed, have a decent grasp of the mechanics of it. Eventually, our teacher disappeared without explanation (this was the eighties, nobody said and nobody asked) leaving us all seriously lacking in confidence, not to mention knowledge of the language. I decided that even if I miraculously fluked my way into university, which I did (thanks only to the wonderful replacement teacher who spent her holidays cramming with us in her own home) I should take a Gap Year because all the other students there would be super human and certainly possess a much higher (we're talking stratospheres) level of German than I did.

I'd be an Au-Pair. That was the answer.

And so I arrived in Cologne, ever thereafter known as Köln, because for the first month, Ilse spoke not a word of English to me, determined as she was that I should be fluent in German by the time I left almost a year later. I know enough about languages now to know that it doesn't matter how much you study, there is no substitute for living and breathing – and eventually dreaming – the language with the natives. And when your grasp of the language is basic at best when you arrive, those natives may as well be speaking Klingon.

Seven year old Andreas didn't speak a word to me for the first hour or two but then giggled his way through my renditions of Paddington in German with my awful English accent, and little clue (there were a few pictures, thankfully) of what I was reading. Andreas' ability in English, I have to say, rivalled my own.

Andreas tucked up in bed, I settled down to my first evening of chat, steeling myself to communicate through pointing and charades and over-zealous smiling, and trying to push away the cloak of gloom as I realised I hadn't appreciated quite how hard a new country was going to be, and wasn’t that my 19th birthday winking at me from a week away, the very real prospect of exactly none, zilch, zero friends with whom to party.

Then I heard the word, 'Urlaub'.

Yes! A word I recognised! 'Majorca' I said. Ilse looked blank. So I fanned my face. She nodded and tilted her head upwards as it to catch the rays. And I jumped around a little, arms swaying in the air, to show 'Magalluf' (it was THAT holiday after leaving school) to which Ilse said, 'Ah, sexy Urlaub' and promptly left the room.

When she returned, she was carrying a pile of photo albums.

'Mein Urlaub,' she said, 'ist verschieden.' I could understand isolated vocab like this, from my tiny collection of abstract words which I'd learnt for use in essays about what we were going to do about Aids and whether communism was really dead - perfect for some light post-supper chat, even if I didn’t have the words to aptly express my gratitude for the meal.

Different. Yes, Ilse's holidays were a little different, certainly to what this 18 year old was used to, anyway. I realised this to my absolute horror with the very first turn of the page. This quirky, well-meaning, but fairly austere mother of a seven year old, who was older than my own mother, smiled at me from the photographs as she fried an egg on the rickety stove top, totally and utterly naked.

And as we flicked through pictures of Ilse and her friends playing tennis, sharing a bottle of wine, and - god forbid – dancing, all generally naked save for the odd mesh t-shirt barely skirting the belly button, a strange sense of calm came over me. I was to spend ten months living with this nudist camp enthusiast, who'd had this son, as I was told that first night through various waves of her hand and laborious leafing through the dictionary, with a soon-to-be-ex ('You're leaving?' I later learned was the conversation, 'then leave me with a baby.') She would also pay for me to take intensive German lessons, twenty hours a week – the best education I have ever had, bar none – and would eventually delight in my tales of all the other weird and generally wonderful friends I made in my time in Köln. I realised on that first evening that I had seen this woman with no clothes on and nothing could faze me now.

I took a chance taking a year out and it was the best decision I ever made. It's a cliché, but true. And much of that was thanks to Ilse. She is the most unusual woman I've ever met, before or since, but what an absolute treasure she turned out to be.
