Guest Post - Escaping into the Pages by Carys Jones - Blog Tour

I was eight when I first fully appreciated the amount of magical power held within a book. My Mum had leant me her dog eared copy of The Little House on the Prairie, the exact same copy she used to curl up and read when she was a little girl. I was sat in my shoebox of a bedroom with the rain hammering on the window outside but when I opened up the book I was suddenly in another world – out on the vast grasslands of the American prairies. If I close my eyes I’m still able to journey back there. And what made the whole experience of going there even more special was that my Mum had used the very same portal as the one that I was currently holding.

Reading a book is like going on a journey. My whole life is a list of all the books I’ve read and the places I’ve been within them. I need only look at one of the books on my shelf and I’m transported to the place and time I was in when I first cracked open its spine. Reading has always been a huge part of my life.

My love of reading is definitely what made me want to write. I was so enraptured by the magic I found within a book that I became keen to try and replicate it for myself. The more I read, the more wild my imagination became and the more I knew that I had to write.

Through books I’ve been a ballerina, an astronaut, an alien, a serial killer. You name it, books allowed me to be it.

Even now, as a fully-fledged adult I’m still mesmerised by the world of books. Just last month I read Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys which broke my heart a dozen times whilst educating me about a part of history I previously had no idea about.

If one day someone says to me that one of my books took them on a journey, that it has a special place on their shelf and in their heart then I’ll know that I’ve done my job as a writer. Because that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do – to share the magic that helped me become the dreamer that I am today.

Thank you Carys for sharing your love of reading with us.
